I would strongly recommend against using third party software to do this, as Win 10 already has the means built in it's just they hide it very well. As others have mentioned you can restrict updates on metered connections (although I've never tested/confirmed myself..it makes sense).
IF you want to stop windows from checking (meaning YOU will be responsible for triggering windows updates). You can easily do so via the group policy editor.
This article covers changing windows updates settings in the group policy editor, scroll down to the section headed "Stop automatic updates in Group Policy editor". That editor will give you many of the options earlier versions had. I changed mine to 'Notify for download and notify for install', the checks should not happen too often and the data used should be minimal. Then YOU can decide when to update.
edited to add: Just this last year I've had windows update break dcom on non-domain environments, builds with Visual Studio 2013 and one particular NPM package worked but resulted in non-functional code (developer never figured out why, worked around that issue). If you have third party software that needs to run, lettings windows force updates is a BAD idea. As another mentioned you need to be able to snapshot/backup before so you have a proper means to revert as uninstalling windows updates doesn't always revert cleanly.
