Dish Network hlep

Morning all,

I need help with my dish configuration. At home I have Dish Network. Instead of paying Dish extra for everything for my TT I have been just grabbing my Hopper and taking that with us. It works great for watching stuff we have recorded on it. For longer trips we decided we want the ability to watch live TV so I bought this on amazon.

Our first trip trying to use it was weird. I hooked everything up and eventually got a signal however we were unable to get any local channels and I don't think I was getting HD. We were about 2 hours west of where we live. I don't want to call Dish because I'm pretty sure they'll tell me I need to pay more for the privilege of using my service wherever I want. I assume the problem is with the responders the Hopper receiver is looking for but I'm not sure.

Has anyone ran into this and have a resolution? Is there an easy button?

Spot beam "footprints" vary quite a bit in size shape, so it's entirely possible to travel hundreds of miles that happen to stay within an oblong shaped beam. There are also a few locals that are on CONUS beams rather than smaller spot beams, and can be picked up nationwide on at least one satellite. Our service address is currently a Vermont address that's in one of the rare ZIP codes that receives dual market locals from both the Albany, NY and Burlington, VT DMA's. When we head south in January, we'll be able to still receive the western arc SD feed of the Albany locals on one spot beam down to northern VA, but we'll lose the Burlington locals that are on a different spot beam around the NY/PA line.

We change our Dish service address as often as daily with no problems when traveling. There is no extra charge for taking your at home receiver with you in your RV, and many part-time RV'ers do exactly that. We've found that the Dish online chat system works best for us when making the changes, and we use a pre-written script with the new address that we just copy and paste into the chat window. Make sure they ONLY change your service address, and NOT your billing address. You can check that using your MYDish account and correct it if necessary.

Wow... I didn't know it would be that easy. Any chance you could share the script?

Sure... I keep a file of the scripts with address that we expect to return to from time to time, but editing in a new address is easy enough when needed. If you're boondocking somewhere, just use any near by address. Dish really doesn't care.

    Hi,

This account is for my RV, and my SERVICE address has changed.

My billing address has NOT changed.

Please change my SERVICE address only to:

    13208 State Road 72
    Sarasota, FL 34241

    and update my program guide.

    Thank you!

Others have addressed your local stations issue, but I think there's another more basic issue . . . It doesn't sound like your dish was aimed correctly if you weren't picking up HD channels + you may not have been receiving the sat that your locals are on.

After you set up your dish, did you do a Check Switch on your Hopper?

I did not do a Check Switch. I'll do that next time.

That's a nice price for that setup.

I can be 300 miles away from home (Galveston to Leakey) and still receive my local stations. I'm not using a Hopper though.

    I agree with:
No issue with taking your equipment where you want, we do,
Contact Dish customer service to the new area you are in IF you want locals for that area while you are there, and
Using Dish Chat works a lot better than telephone calls to their customer service

  • Local networks are sent from the satellite on spot beams ... that only cover a small geographic area. When you make a significant move from your home coverage area you need to notify Dish customer service to change your SERVICE area to the new area you are in and that you want locals for that area. DO NOT allow them to change your billing address! I find using Dish Chat works a lot better than telephone calls to their customer service. You will need to do this every time you move from one spot beam coverage area to another.
  • Depending on where you live 2 hours away may mean you are out of your locals area. Just call them and give them your current zip code. No issue with taking your equipment where you want.
