- rv2goExplorer III guess I am just different. I shut down my Dell laptop with 8.1 ever night. It only takes a minute or so to start up the next morning. During the day, I just close the lid between sessions for it to sleep.
- magicbusExplorer III reboot laptop every 3 weeks or so. Turning it off means waiting to boot, starting the VPN, starting and entering a 4 digit pin for the Encrypt single use key software, entering the 8 digit generated key plus my 8 digit password into the VPN, logging onto email, logging onto the 4 servers I use every day... even every 3 weeks is tediously too often. I run win 7 pro and see no difference from when I boot to 3 weeks later. In fact usually it is windows updates that force me to boot.

Dunno what computer you have, but on all three of mine the HD is spinning if the computer is powered up.
I use an automatic "hibernate" after 30 mins of inactivity.
THEN the HD stops.
I also allow Microsoft to install updates automatically.
I get the occasional message that my computer was restarted to allow updates to complete. - HappytravelerExplorerI shut my notebook down about every 2 or 3 days, otherwise it gets sluggish.

Seems like that would make for some pretty slow data access.

You just want to be sure the HD is powering to sleep so it isn't spinning 24/7.
A restart every week or two will clear out any programs running that might slow things down, as well as install any new updates.
No. You do not need to shut it down every night but as others said, it will not hurt.

I leave our media and data center on 24/7, with weekly restarts. The restarts are for updates and memory clearance. MS is not good at memory management and as others have said, your computer will slow down over time if not rebooted.
For power savings you can set it to sleep (monitor/HD) after x minutes of non use. You can also shut it off. It does not hurt. - mich800ExplorerI shut mine down once or twice a week. But it also does not take long to boot up. I am also using win 8.1.
- RoyBExplorer III turn mine off at the end of using it each day.
I also use the FREE VERSION ADVANCED SYSTEMCARE and MALWAREBYTES ANTI-MALWARE programs about every three days to insure everything is running at top speed.
Just what I do here - works well for me with my WIN 7 Professional laptop setup.
Roy Ken - fj12ryderExplorer IIIIf you don't get up in the middle of the night to check email there is no need to leave it on. Why waste the juice? So it takes a extra minute to boot up in the morning, I'm sure there isn't anything that can't wait while you grab a cup of coffee.
There is little current draw when the computer is hibernating, but why even waste that? Look around the house and see all those red, green, or blue led's glowing. All that is wasted electricity, now why add even more, with no reason. We shut everything off at night, just no good reason not to. I've been doing it for about 20 years with no issues...no dead hard drives, no toasted CPU's, no bad memory. I guess I just don't like waste that I can avoid. - 2oldmanExplorer IIno
