Older laptops (and perhaps some new ones) have a mechanical switch to turn Wifi on or off. True:
Manufactures are different. Most have a little button.
I have exposed to many a person a small slider button on the front edge of a laptop.
Then I would say - "invoice will be in the mail". ;) - pulsarExplorerMy laptop always drops wifi, when operating on battery. There is a preference setting, drop or not drop, when asleep on plugged in.
When the laptop goes to sleep, I know it drops wifi because I can see it reconnect. (Or, if I access the internet too quickly, there is an "no internet" error message.)
As a result of this thread, I took a look at out router. Whether I let the laptop go to sleep, or manual disconnect from wifi, the router shows the IP address is still in use. Only when I "release" the IP address, does the router show the IP address is not in use.

One problem with Win 8 and 8.1 is that there seems to be no way to completely shut off updates as there was in Win 7 and earlier and whenever Microsoft decides to send out updates they get downloaded and installed - and these could use up bandwidth. - OldmeExplorerDepends on the OS and you power settings.
Also
W8 does not cut off anything.
It goes into sleep mode.

Make a quick shutdown short cut:

This way he can also publish the times and you won't be in the middle of something important.
- 8ntw8tnExplorerThanks for the responses. I checked my settings and the laptop is set to "sleep" when the lid is closed, whether on battery or plugged in. The manager has, on occasion, shut the wifi off and then back on the first thing in the morning to clear the system. That's really inconvenient when you're on-line at the time. We're in a park for the winter so we really have no choice but to use the park's wifi most of the time, though we do use our phones as a hot spot when we do anything like banking, credit cards, etc. for a secure connection.
- mich800ExplorerOr just hit the wifi button and turn it off.
- 2oldmanExplorer III wouldn't go near AOL, not that it has anything to do with what we're talking about.
