End of Windows as we know it

I'm really glad I don't use Windows any more- I see Linux picking up more users.

  • I'm sure Apple won't be far behind if they see this business model working.

"Doesn't anyone understand what the word "Desktop" means?"

Sure, it's where you access all your programs and data that you store in "The Cloud". :)

I am very curious how this would play out in an organization, say, with about 290,000 employees... would the corporation just stay with Windows 10 in the vain hope things would get better?

I suspect the marketing guy’s at Microsoft have already talked to their major customers and found they are more than OK with the plan. Paying a monthly fee for continuous support, updates on Office and Windows can be budgeted. The last thing a corporation wants is to have 290,000 PC running different versions of Windows because they turned off automatic updates. Been there years ago when updating PC’s required you to physically be at the PC.
  • I’ve moved 95% of what I do to my iPad, iPhone, and iCloud. The only thing I use my Windows based Surface for is to file my taxes, and the data is stored in ICloud. I tried the tax software available online and it wasn’t up to the task. I use the Surface occasionally when a website hasn’t figured out there are non-windows users out there and the website doesn't work.

I used to be a fairly big Excel user but now have found 1) I don’t need Excel anymore as 2) I don’t use a lot of spread sheets. Those I still use can be handled with the IOS versions of Apple’s Numbers.

Interesting tid bit I ran into is that while you can still get Microsoft Office components on iPads for FREE, if your IPad happens to be a Pro they force you to Office 365 and monthly payments. So if you happen to use the only iPad worth using for Excel, as it supports the Apple pen, you have to pay for it. Didn’t know that when I opted for the Pro.

  • Good time to buy some Apple and Google shares.
Some people won't take kindly to having to "rent" their pc software.
