- Old-BiscuitExplorer IIII'm still trying to figure out why I need a cell phone :H
I was 'tethered' to a phone (24 hr---on call) for 25 yrs. of employment.
Ain't happening in retirement.
I have a cell phone....makes phone calls. Is on desk next to door or in truck and sometimes I'm even in same place.
But when it rings......I decide to answer or NOT.
Family/friends have all the latest gadgets/gizmos and they might as well be surgically implanted. ALL of them will have major withdrawals when cyberspace goes silent.

Do you unlimited users get 4g?
Yes, both of our phones are 4G. We use one or the other as a hotspot if we want Internet connection to the laptops or Roku. - AprilWhineExplorer

Really.. how does one manage to get unlimited data, on a newer phone, that is not throttled, and has good coverage?
How did you get unlimited data? I thought only grandfathers had that. :)
Something is missing.
We have to pay full price for our new phones. We had Razr Maxx phones but they both had the battery swelling issue. To replace them, I bought refurbished Samsung Galaxy GS3 phones from an Ebay seller, then activated them online.
Notice we do not have the latest and greatest. ;) But our phones are great! I'm looking at possibly replacing them with Note 3 phablets if the price drops in the near future. - AprilWhineExplorer

Nah, I think I'll stick to my dumb phone and spend my money on fuel.
Why do you think it has to be phone or fuel? Hubby and I spend about $130/month on our unlimited data smart phones. Among other things, we use them to stream video for movies or tv shows we want to watch. We do not have cable or satellite TV, and I think the price is comparable.
The ones in favor of the dumb phones are ones who have never gotten used to having the entire world of information in their handbag. When we're going down the road and see something interesting, I can Google for more information before we reach the exit. ;)
When hubby gets tired and says find a place to park, I can check RV Park Reviews, Passport America and Overnight RV Parking from the road.
What's that gun owners say about cold dead fingers? At least mine will be well manicures. :C
We've had our grandfathered unlimited data plan on Verizon since 2008. - 2oldmanExplorer IIDo you unlimited users get 4g?

Because if you don't change your phone out, you aren't forced into a "new" contract with the newer limitations. I still have unlimited data - because I'm using the same style phone that I did 8 years ago when the phone companies were clueless how much that was going to cost them... And yes, I did replace my phone a couple years ago. I bought my replacement on my own and just had the company activate it. Since I didn't get a "free" phone through them, I didn't have to change my contract.
I also still have my unlimited data on Verizon. I would lose it if I bought a new phone on contract (those aren't free, they're $200 - $300 for a new model or one that has only been out a few months), so I don't. I do upgrade phones about once a year, but I wait until the newer model I want has been out a few months, and look for a below market deal and buy one off craigslist or swappa.com. Then just take the sim card out of the old phone, put in the newer phone, and sell the old phone on ebay.
Personally, I use 2 to 4.5 gig of data a month -- on the higher end of that when camping, as I tether my laptop to my android phone to get internet on the laptop. My Verizon bill is only $60 a month out the door, as my DW gets me her corporate discount of 22%. - Dutch_12078Explorer IIIMy Tracfone Android smartphone cost $50, and my monthly usage for talk, texts, and data runs about $10 using annual cards. Some hinted that the phones are useless when there's no cell service, but my compass app still works, my GPS app still works, my e-reader app still works, as well as a number of other apps that don't need a constant connection. That's assuming there's no WiFi available either. If there is, then quite few more features work, including being able to make and receive phone calls using my VOIP app. Go back to a dumb phone? No way...
- toedtoesExplorer IIIIt varies. Some months a whole lot, other months not so much. Overall, my average is enough that if I went with a newer plan, I'd be paying more than I do now for unlimited.
