Garmin Montana 600T How to Download to Computer?

I own a Garmin Montana 600T GPS unit with Garmin TOPO U.S. 24K Southwest Maps (not installed). I have been recording several tracks on the 600T as I drive around in my ATV. I have about 400 Garmin 60CSX tracks saved on my computer. I want to save the tracks from the 600T the same way but I haven't figured out how to move them to my computer (Windows 8.1).

Please give me step by step instructions starting with what software needs to be loaded on my computer.

Thanks,
LeRoy

  • I finally figured it out. When I connect the 600T to my laptop, it becomes Drive "E". I then search Drive "E" to find the Garmin>GPX folder. All my SAVEd files are there. I then Drag and Drop them onto my laptop hard drive. All the data is there. Problem solved.

I CLEAR the log after each day's run otherwise it just continues and I end up with this huge file for the next day when only a portion of it applies for Day 2. Sometimes, I am gone for several days before I am back by my computer to download the files.

I do give each file a descriptive name starting with YYYY MM DD and a short name. Yesterdays file is called "2015 03 30 Black Cat Mine". I have a folders labelled: 2007-07. 2008-09, ..., 2014-15 in which I store the files for the winter season.

    Thanks for all your help.

  • 1: Simply plug it in and upload prior to Saving the track. It will likely be named something like Active Track 001. Ideally you don't want to Save the file in the GPS before uploading to the PC. Reason is the GPS will compress the file and eliminate some of the tracking points. Thus the track will have fewer points, making the track less accurate.
2: Open MapSource, Click on File > Open, then scroll to the track you want. It will add itself to MapSource. Then click on the Send To Device button located next to the circled button from the image above. Click "OK" as needed.
  • I have always downloaded my 6CSx to my laptop doing exactly what you described above. I was doing the same for the 600T AFTER I SAVEd and then CLEARed the Track.

I got suspicious this morning about the SAVEd and CLEAR that I have been doing so I recorded today's ATV ride; SAVEd it; but didnot CLEAR it. Then I used MapSource and BINGO it downloaded to my computer the way I was expecting it to download.

Now I know what my problem was: CLEARing before downloading. I now have new questions.
    1) How do I pull up yesterday's SAVEd (in the 600T) file and download it to my computer?
    2) How do I take one of my Saved to Computer 60CSx files and upload it to the 600T?

By the way, I was simultaneously running both the 60CSx and the 600T today. Both downloads are identical and the Track Properties of the 600T agrees with the ACTIVE Track Properties of the 60CSx. I will also stay with MapSource rather than BaseCamp since it will work for both GPS'.

Thank You Very Much for Your Help. I was not getting anywhere using the Owner's Manual. I will, however, go back and re-read it see if it makes sense.

  • I use MapSource as I don't care for BaseCamp.
1: Plug GPS into PC and wait a few minutes for the PC to recognize the GPS.
2: Open MapSource and import to the PC from the Montana by,
Clicking on the icon circled. A dialog box will popup asking you to check or uncheck some boxes. Check the boxes depending on what you want to save. Another dialog box will popup confirming Transfer Complete. Click OK.
3: Once the information has been transferred to the PC, go to the upper left corner, click File, then Save As and select a location to save the file. Name the file something meaningful, i.e. Paiute Trip 3-29-15. The Desktop is easiest to find and remember for later use.
  • Jerry,
I tried downloading BaseCamp. I am not sure that it has downloaded correctly. I can not find the BaseCamp icon. The "BaseCamp_446" icon shows on my Desktop but all it does is start the BaseCamp download program. I don't think that it is working correctly. I don't know where the BaseCamp icon similar to the MapSource icon is. How do I find it. or What do I do next.

When I try MapSource, it connects but it only shows the "Current" map. Since I SAVED and then CLEARED the CURRENT map, all that downloads is one to three data points of my present location.

    I have downloaded the "Montana™ 600 series owner’s manual for use with models 600, 600t, 650, 650t". I can't find the information/directions about uploading/downloading files between the 600T and my laptop computer.

Can you give me more directions?

    Thank you for your response,
    LeRoy
  • You need Garmin's MapSource or BaseCamp. Hook the GPS up to the PC an then do what you did with the 60.
