Gmail has gotten a wild hair about security and with the wizzing contest between them and Thunder Bird over security I'll most like drop gmail.
And yes sometimes they are slow to load.
You don't NEED "Thunderbird" to access Gmail, you can log into Gmail DIRECTLY from your Internet browser.
Simple, easy and no delays..
That is how I do it, just timed mine, took exactly 4.7 SECONDS to get into my Gmail from my FireFox.
