I have and use google maps on my smartphone as a gps on occasion. The problem is that it uses a lot of power, and the phone needs to be attached to a charger or it will quit pretty quickly. Also, you need cell service and data access to download map details. It works, but with limits. A good GPS unit has its maps already loaded, and only needs to be able to see the GPS satellites.
