maps, GPS devices, etc. are not foolproof and all are capable of doing that which is why it is prudent to double check the plotted route before hitting the road. we've had situations where our Street Atlas has told us to make a turn but we ignored the instruction because we could see that it was wrong or would lead un into trouble. blind faith in a map or GPS is a recipe for disaster.
