High definition tripod dish question

Hello,
I recently purchased a 2008 class c that came with a winegard roadtrip sdi roof mounted satellite dish. The previous owner never used it and knew nothing about it (he was the second owner). After talking with winegard, I would need the h-24 or hr-24 receiver that I can get through them. That would work with the in motion dish on my roof, using DirecTV (only service the older dish will work with) although there is no high definition option. OK, that would be fine for having tv while travelling, but if I’m parked under trees is there a tripod mounted dish I could switch to for reception? According to winegard my only option there is the TR6018 tripod/dish kit, and still no high def. In this article (admittedly getting old as written in 2013) it states that if you get or have DirecTV in your home, you can get a tripod mounted dish that would let you get the same service (channel lineup, not including locals, and HD) that you have at home link . The author uses this dish link . So, is the winegard rep correct and there is no longer a high def capable tripod mounted dish for DirecTV? Or is the author of the link still correct (if not outdated) and there is such a thing? (Sorry if the hyperlinks don’t work, not sure if I got it right or not). Thanks for any help or info, I’m a lifelong cable user and still trying to sift through all the new to me satellite info.
  • Thanks again for all the great info. I will be researching with a lot more knowledge on the subject now.

If you are using DirecTV then contact them for a "Disaster Recovery Kit"

Tripod and dish, I think the price is reasonable.. You do have to aim it, but that's easy once you learn how.
  • It is odd that Winegard does not sell the Slimline antennas when they stamp a major portion of the reflectors for Dish and DirecTV.
  • Check your local Craigslist ads for used sat dishes. You can often find good deals there.
  • I use the tripod system from Here with a Slimline dish. Works great and has for the past 6 years full time.
  • Thanks for the information. I was confused because I assumed that winegard, being a big player in the satellite dish business, would have every angle covered and if they didn't have a portable tripod dish for DirecTV in HD then no one would. I'm glad I was wrong. I will use the existing winegard roof mounted dish since it's already there just for in motion tv, SD will be good enough for while we are traveling. But I will get the tripod mount dish that can receive HD for while we are parked at the campsites.

    Thanks again.
  • If you want High Def and DirecTV then buying a tripod and antenna like the one pictured above will get you that. If you want HD and you want to use a roof mounted dome style antenna you would need to change to Dish AND update the antenna (spell that replace) to one that works with the current Dish satellites.
If you don't care about HD and you are a DirecTV customer you can buy a D12 (SD only receiver) or an H/HR24 which will work with your existing antenna for SD and can be used with a DirecTV tripod mounted antenna (not the Winegard version). Several companies sell the antenna and tripod setup that works for mobile users. It does take some training and it can be quite frustrating the first couple of times but once you get the hang of it, using a tripod based antenna is pretty simple as long as you don't have to move too often.

No, but perhaps he's talking about his own products.

I use a Slimline dish and a high-quality tripod. There's no way I'm being without HD.
