I just finished installing the 8.1 update over the weekend. IMHO it is worth it, Microsoft finally gave the consumer what they want, an updated OS that doesn't require you to relearn everything. It goes back to the windows interface we have used for the past decade or so, of course if you really like having to swipe thru pages to try and find the desktop and traditional icons, then this was right up your alley. I think most people never liked the 8.0 interface and for the first time in history MS listened, 8.1 boots into the traditional desktop and if you really do like the swipe style start screen from 8.0 the icon is right there where the old start button used to be.
It took more than 3 hours to do the whole update with multiple restarts and the download is about 1.2GB. But to me it was worth it. You did have to install all the updates available to 8.0 before installing 8.1, then just go to either the microsoft website or the the windows store and you can get the update there. Good luck!
