How do I turn off these notifications on my phone?

HTC Incredible version 1. Verizon is the provider. I received some sort of notification of a news story this morning on my phone and want to turn these off. How do I do that?

Thanks

  • What apps are running all the time?

    Tap settings
    Apps
    Running
Look for any news type app that's always active tap it
Check to see if notifications for the app are checked
Untick if selected return to launcher

    delete the 'news reader' app
likely it is an RSS app

looking at my old incredible there is a 'news' app in the apps
you can delete 'feeds' using the menu button
    try deleting the feeds

Thanks. I deleted the 5 feeds. It said there was something like 250 news stories. I have no idea what those are or how they got there.

Hmm, didn't work. I received a notification about something in WA DC this afternoon. There are no feeds listed since I deleted them originally. It's apparently not a text message as it's not listed in the text message screen?

When I hit the notification symbol that showed up in the upper left corner of the screen it just opened my tune-in radio app to the main menu. There was no sign of the details of the message, just the main menu screen.

  • I really would like to know that someone was killing folks at the Navy Base if I lived in the Wash. DC area. If you don't then I would see what I could do to stop these messages. If you do, are you sure you want to drive onto the base not knowing what was going on?

There are many answers.. However all of them have bad side effects.

In some cases you can to to app manager and run down the app that sent the notice and turn off notifications,,, Some you can't.

If all else fails you have to "Root" the phone (This means you get access to the phone's root operating system folder, you become basically a "Super user" and, you can SERIOUSLY mess up your phone and turn it into a very expensive brick) I do not recommend this.

What kind of news story? There are Amber Alerts and well as Government mandated alerts. You can turn off the Amber Alerts but not the Government ones.

The one this morning was for the incident at the Navy Base.
