- jrpExplorerYou need a good external Omni antenna and a booster. there are several different brands, models and selling sources. I wont recommend any specific ones over others, they all work. You do need to be careful to match the frequencies of the devices to the frequencies of your carrier & band. ie: not all are compatible with Verizon 4G 700 band.
The only comment above that I disagree with is the one saying an antenna is not important. If you're in a fringe area with weak signal, a good external antenna coupled with a booster makes a significant difference vs booster only with no antenna.
I travel all over the west and have 3 different sets of antenna's and boosters that I test side by side in different areas, they make a huge difference and I'm rarely without a usable Verizon signal, except out in the extreme boonies.RVcrazy wrote:
We need an internet booster to improve the performance of our Verizon connection. Suggestions? Where to purchase? - cpaulsenExplorerHave used my Wilson Sleek with Verizon for a couple of years now. My JetPack sits in it and have never had a problem. I used the 12" magnetic mount antenna with it.
- TechWriterExplorerLook at this Comparison of 4G Signal Boosters.
- Maxi_SignalExplorerWell after a 25 month fight with the FCC we are ready to step up. We got our FCC approval today. I will not post anything else. Do not want to break any rules if the moderator would like more info I would be happy to get it to him. We will have members of the RV community independently testing prototypes shortly.
- rwbradleyExplorerI would not sweat too much over the trucker antenna for a Sleek. For a system that is going to give you about 25db of gain, the trucker antenna only adds a couple of db more. I am not sure it is worth the extra money for how little extra you would get out of it (IMHO). The other thing to be careful of is that the mini mag antenna is the only one that seems to work universally for any carrier/band but in the case of the trucker antenna there is actually a loss as opposed to gain on the T-Mobile 4G bands.
- aslaksonExplorerJust make sure the Sleek you buy is compatible with your cell provider - there are different models for the different carriers. The newest Verizon versions are awesome and support the latest Verizon 4g+. I strongly recommend the 3gstore.com folks - they stand behind what they sell and are very knowledgeable. The trucker-style Wilson antenna is about the highest gain non-directional mobile cell antenna you can get, and it works great as well.
Our Verizon 4G+ MiFi is permanently cuddled into the Sleek cradle, and the Sleek connects to the external trucker antenna. Gives us internet anywhere in the rig.
al - pianotunaNomad IIIHi Mr Wizard,
Thanks for the correction on Verizon and it being CDMA. It is going to cause me problems next winter as I'll be traveling through "Verison only" areas. I'll have to get a prepaid I guess, from Walmart.
I suggest the OP look on Ebay for a used Sleek as the current product may not be compatible with Verizon. sleek
In Canada only Manitoba Telephone Service is still supporting CDMA. Last summer even they started to intoduce GSM. - MrWizardModerator

One of the issues is that the old CDMA technology allowed up to ten towers to "share" the signal. GSM does not do this. But the tower networks were put in place first--so fringe areas may nearly always have poor service.
Verizon is NOT GSM
i have used a Wilson sleek for years, while not the BEST system
it is certainly the most affordable, and better than anything else that can come close in price..
and yes the truckers cellular antenna coupled to the sleek is an excellent idea - JohnnyTExplorer IIwww.digitalantenna.com/prods/cellularsignalboosters_boat-rv.html
This what I have used for years. Basically its an amplifier repeater.
Once installed in conjunction with a wireless router and aircard (what we use) or mifi you basically have a wifi.
You still need line of sight but it will extend your range by 30 to 50 miles depending on which model you select. We have the 30...
The system supports multiple simultaneous cell and PC connections.
Ours has been on the job for about 10 years...
We will have connection when no one around us does plus on the road... Once in a while while on the road you will hit a dead spot but in a few minutes you are back on the air. We have never had any problem while parked regardless of where we were. - rwbradleyExplorerI am going to break the trend so far in this thread. An external antenna for your hotspot will only give you maybe 5 or so db of gain, that will barely make a difference and you have to be really careful about cable length, cable type etc. as they can cause significant loss (sometimes more than the gain of the antenna. A Wilson Sleek will give you about 25db gain, that is a massive improvement. I have the sleek and love it. It makes a huge difference. I have regularly seen where I can go from 1 bar to 3-4 bars. There are a few things you need to know for you to have success with it though:
1) it is an amp, but it needs a signal to amplify, meaning that if you have no cell service to begin with it will not help you. It will make service better but will not provide you service in the middle of the desert where there is none.
2) the antenna MUST be at least 6 feet from the base or it will cause oscillation (like audio feedback)
3) in the case of the sleek, the hotspot or phone must sit in the cradle the whole time, and in the case of a phone, you must not put the phone/cradle up to your ear unless you want to melt your brain
Based on all the things I have tried including external antennas, directional antennas etch, for $100-200 the Sleek will be your biggest bang for your bucks by a huge margin.
