iPad mini retina

I am about to buy an iPad Mini retina for traveling for both planning itinerary and on the road when we deviate from the "plan". I am a long time Mac user and have had an iPhone for a year.
What I want to do is reduce the books and maps we take on our trip (8.5' pop up TC). I love the iPhone apps but the screen is a bit small for doing maps or reading about destinations.

I know you can download Amazon Kindle eBooks with a Kindle app and there are books available from iTunes. Benchmark atlas has California, Oregon and New Mexico apps and 3 of my fave photography book series (Laurent Martres series) are available on Amazon. I also have a ton of pdfs and other documents plus images of places to explore stored on my Mac laptop. I am not sure how to move this info from my laptop to the iPad mini. There is no USB port. I may have to get on the iCloud?

I think this would be ideal for on the road and we can leave some the books/maps behind. Also, I can preview my images in the field from my camera, I think but don't know how yet. What do you think? Could you tell me your experiences? I am planning to get the 64gb unit with WiFi and 4gb LTE version. I am with Verizon and have an iPhone5. I think it will cost $10 more a month.

Thank-you for your ideas and feedback

  • Speaking of iPads, my friend got an iPad Air, a Nike-Fuel Band along with a loose it app from her hubby on Valentine's Day,LOL. I said is he trying to tell you something. :B
  • wildtoad: both as I understood from reading a post here in this forum that if you just get wifi then you miss out on GPSs. Or at least that is what I understood. When we travel, we are usually not close to hotspots (wifi type) so I want it to function like the iPhone.

This is what I want to accomplish:

    1. move jpg images (shooting RAW + jpg from dSLR) and see detail especially for landscape. Also, for concerts so I can show and tell and sell. No USB port so how? I use compact flash cards although with D800 it uses SD also so it can be used for, among other things, a place for jpgs and RAW would be written to CF cards so I could use it with some sort of card reader? I don't want so many peripherals and would rather do it wirelessly

    2. copy files (pdfs, Word docs, and images) from laptop to iPad mini for reference so I don't have to bring out the Mac. I understand it does not have a USB port so that will be done via iCloud and Dropbox? I haven't moved any files between MacBook and iPhone except for synching apps and whatever else goes along for the ride. Something I will ask Apple about or research on line, unless someone here has a mini-lesson

    3. download apps, maps, eBooks, etc. for reference for planning and on the fly destination decisions. Do you download apps, eBooks on the laptop then synch or iPad mini or both (as in case of apps larger than 50mb that are too large for iPhone5)?

    4. larger than iPhone therefore easier to read and not so much scrolling and zooming. I can share the info with DH and we can look at possibilities together (stopped at a pullout, of course). He sometimes doesn't understand my directions so if I show him the map then I won't get blamed if we get lost.

    5. Use as GPS. We also have a trail GPS so we will have things covered (unless in a cave or thick woods)

    6. I read where you can migrate iPhone apps to the iPad Mini. Is it better to use apps especially for iPads to take advantage of higher resolution and whatever else?

    7. Is there an earphone jack for music? Our old mp3 player has a dead battery and I didn't want to shell out more $$$ for an iPod. I may though go for the classic as it holds 160gb! We could travel for months without hearing the same song twice.

    8. any other comments, uses, etc.?

    Thank-you
  • You can sync the iPad and Mac via wifi or the same cable you sync your iPhone with. One easy way to move PDFs or othe documents is via drop box but you will need the cloud. It is also possible to have pictures take on the iPhone or mini automatically sync with each other and the Mac using iCloud.
  • You can move files from your Mac laptop to the iPad turning on iTunes, plugging the iPad into the Mac with its charging cord, and synching.

My iPad2 is a 32GB wi-fi only. It holds TONS of stuff. I use Files Pro to store my files on the iPad. It is especially important to consider whether you will have access to the cloud or live internet. Since I don't, my app choices may not be the same as yours. Do a search on some of the recent iPad threads on RV.net to see what others use.

I even rented a movie from iTunes to take on my next trip; it took almost 2 hours to download that movie, so it must be a huge file. It went onto the iPad in a second or two during the synch.

Thanks for the hint on the Benchmark atlas apps. I'll check those out before my planned Oregon trip this summer.

And speaking of checking out, you can often check out e-books from your home library for free to read offline later on your iThing.
