light bulbs

My son told me today that starting jan 1st it will be illegal in USA to make in-condensate lights any more. they are making them 24/ 7 to make a large supply and after they sell out you can only get LED and halogen and one other bulb, can't remember what it was now.

  • Yup. God Bless America. Only CFL's will be produced starting 2014...........they will be made ONLY in China.

We ban something and the only country that makes the new replacement is China. Not to mention the new eco energy saving bulb is filled with mercury and so now will all our landfills be. :R

This says it all, take the few seconds to watch it all it's very sadly hilarious!

EVERYTHING you need to know about compact florescent bulbs AND how to dispose of these little dangerous bulbs if you drop one per the EPA.

Other countries started in 2005 and we are finally catching up. Switch to CFL or LED...because incandescent bulbs will go the way of the tube television...adios! it's about time...incandescent bulbs will be able to be sold and manufactured under a few restrictive conditions but I doubt we will ever see them as incandescent bulbs are energy hogs and really inefficient.

Each State will implement phase out dates..I believe California's is December 31, 2016. I don't know the other States, as I was employed in California when it was signed into law in 2007.....Dennis

Sorry Mr. Edison, after all this time, the first practical light bulb (1879) is not good enough.
  • Halogen was mentioned in the OP. A halogen bulb is an incandescent. It has a filament and is an incandescent. It is a slightly more efficient incandescent, but still an incandescent and no where near as efficient as fluorescent or LED. Halogen bulbs burn very hot and you should never touch the bulb glass with your fingers when installing. The oil from your fingers will burn on the glass causing a hot spot and early bulb failure.

There was a Time Magazine article a few months ago about new technology Incandescent bulbs that meet the energy efficiency standards, work with dimmers, etc. and are as energy efficient as some LED bulbs.
  • yep, big government mandated that incandescents be phased out and replaced by fluorescents starting with the 100 watters. of course now there will be a problem with all the mercury in discarded fluorescent bulbs.

If LED work as well as I hope, they will take over from the squiggly bulbs. I have been incredibly underwhelmed by the squiggly bulbs - mediocre light that has to warm up, and especially they do not at all seem to last longer than incandescent bulbs in normal use.

I just bought my first LED bulb for our house, we'll see how it goes!

  • I think you meant florescent. Some specialized incandescent bulbs are exempt for now, such as appliance and 3-way lamp bulbs.
