MS Windows Problem

I have a new HP laptop that I've been using for the past month, running 64 bit Windows 7. A couple of weeks ago I got the message "Please do not shut down or unplug installing update 1 of 8". Now, every time I shut down the computer I get the same message and when I check the update log it shows that installing updates 1 through 8 failed. When I look at the log, I can see all the times 1-8 failed and I can also see all the other updates that loaded fine.

I've searched the web and tried a couple of things including a program recommended by Microsoft, but nothing works. Would anyone have the key to this problem?

Thanks,

Paul

  • When installing updates with a laptop, after the download part is completed, you should pick the "restart" option to allow installing of the updates.

My Asus will show the same warning as a certain percentage of the updates will install before the laptop does a warm "restart". The rest will happen as the restart continues. If you have a computer password the window shows up while the installation is still happening.

DO NOT ENTER the password right away. Wait about 5 minutes to allow the process to finish. If not you can bomb the process.

Uninstalled updates can be selected by clicking the box to their left in the windows update window showing previous updates. Select and re-install the failed updates. The current message you see on start-up will continue until you select the failed updates and re-install them.

The warning on some brands of laptops can be misleading. It makes you think you made a mistake. If the computer is not password protected, the messaging would show the process finishing on the warm "restart".
  • Assuming your computer will boot up...

    1. Click the Start button.
    2. In the "Search" box, type system restore.
    3. Click on system restore and follow the prompts to restore your computer to an earlier date.
    4. Reboot.

If your computer will NOT boot up...

    1. Press the ON button.
    2. Press and hold the F8 button while computer is booting
    3. Boot into "Safe Mode"
    4. Follow steps 1-4 above..Dennis
  • Are these Windows Updates? If so, go into settings and shut off automatic updates. Then go to update Windows on your own and do the update and you will be able to follow what is happening during the update. If it fails then you should see why. If these are not Windows updates from Microsoft you need to find the program that is trying to update and also shut off automatic updating. Then update on your own.

You can also try a System Restore back to a date before this first occurred. I would still recommend shutting down auto updating after you do the restore. You are much better off having control of all updates and do them when they are convenient for you to do them. If you do a system restore any software that you installed or changes that you made before the system restore date that restore uses will have to be reinstalled. (Data saved by those programs likely will not be deleted.)
  • I've had things like this happen-I'll manually install the update from control panel/windows update. If that doesn't work I'll install just the critical updates and then be sure to shutdown and not just restart the computer. Usually this works. I have had the issue recently on one machine that I ended up running malwarebytes to clean it up and then did the manual install and all was good.
  • What was the program you tried? Was it the System Update Readiness Tool?

If so, try to do a System Restore to an earlier date before the problem occurred.
