We have DISH in our S/B and use in the RV with a Pathway X2.
My question is for recording is the Hopper3 and Joeys a better system than a Blu Ray player.
We don't qualify for the free Hopper upgrade.
Blu-ray players in the USA, don't record anything, they just play BD, dvd, cd, and most also have USB input for playing other content, and Wifi for internet streaming netflix, youtube, amazon video etc..
if you want to record Satellite content, it has too be with a satellite DVR , and that is encrypted and cannot be copied and used with any other hardware - Big_KatunaExplorer II

If I read your question correctly, I am bit confused.
A Blu Ray plays HD DVDs and doesnt record or process sat signals.
It will deliver a better picture if you have a HD 1080p tv and the recording is in a HD native resolution.
A Hopper will record in 1080i with some compression but is still a good picture.
What I am reading is that some Blu Ray's have Wi-Fi and can also stream from the Internet.
They do not make your DISH TV experience better though from further research on the Hopper.
Thanks and looking for more....
Our Sony BluRay has built in wifi and is enabled to stream Netflix, HULU, etc but it doesnt work very well and has a terrible user interface eg you have to use arrow keys and poor alpha numeric input for searches.
Yes, Hopper has much better streaming capability and netter user interface.
Not familiar with Amazon and other versions but Apple TV is my favorite. The new one uses SIRI for searches, channel finding.
Campground wifi will usually be your limiting factor. - Dutch_12078Explorer IIWe currently have two Hopper 2's (Hopper w/Sling) that work well for us. We have no desire to upgrade to the single Hopper 3 that's currently allowed per account, since it won't fit our requirements. If/when Dish allows multiple 3's, we'll reconsider, but so far the three tuner Hopper 2's have more than served our needs...

So 20 shows simultaneously????? When is there EVER that many GOOD shows on at a time??????
HAH This is true most of the time. My current stick 'n brick cable setup using Windows Media lets me record 6 at once with a cable card. There are times when a 7th show gets bumped, and recorded later.
With the Hopper and six Joey, you could have seven live feeds going on, and still recording 13? programs to the DVR? That's a lot of data, wow.
2TB is a bummer, didn't catch that! With 4tb drives being cheap and even 6, 8 and 10TB in the realm of affordable... bummer. - We_Cant_WaitExplorerSo 20 shows simultaneously????? When is there EVER that many GOOD shows on at a time??????

Thanks for the info. I was going to change to Direct TV to get the Genie. The Hopper is too restrictive on number of shows that can be recorded.
With 16 tuners in a Hopper 3, that's just changed.
Plus, the Hopper 3 can record an OTA program + 15 satellite TV programs + ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX on 1 tuner (Prime Time Any Time) = 20 simultaneous recordings.
However, that 2TB DVR hard drive may now get a real workout.GordonThree wrote:
Fantastic! Wonder how long it'll take to get to market?
DISH says Hopper 3 will be available this month for $15/month. "Qualifying customers" (?) will be able to get a free upgrade.
A Hopper 3 must use DISH Hybrid Pro equipment which is much simpler to wire than previous Hoppers.
The diagram shows the maximum Hopper 3 network (1 Hopper 3 + 6 Joeys). - GordonThreeExplorerFantastic! Wonder how long it'll take to get to market?
I'm still waiting for the cable-card-like WDM tuner Dish demo'd years ago at CES - which would allow Playstation / XBOX / Windows based DVR. Now that Windows' Media Center is dead, I'm sure the Dish card tuner is dead too :(
