New LapTop with Windows 10 start up ???

Just started to attempt to use a Windows10 LapTop for the first time.

It runs to the point I am invited to sign in with the assigned PIN.

Then, just a black screen with a responsive mouse pointer. That's all folks???

What is up, anyone have this experience?

More information needed! Is this used or new? New Windows 10 computers do not come with a PIN number sign-in requirement . . . . . That is something the user sets up. A used computer may come with unknown problems and baggage brought about by the previous owner.

    Either way, more info needed.

It might be as simple as the screen having 2 icons below the entry box: a 12 button keypad, representing the use of a PIN for entry, and a text box, for a Password.

If you click on the text box icon at the first startup, you can simply hit Enter and it'll continue Setup by directing you through the Microsoft account sign-up/in process.
  • I have one machine that a USB printer will cause it to hang up. If you have a mouse or any other peripheral attached unplug them and try booting again.

Spoiler alert, off topic post: I'm not sure what falls into your category "other types of files" but so many apps are web based these days that there is an increasing smaller list of things you can't do with "web work." With that said, I still prefer a Windows laptop or computer but many things that I do related to documents or photos could be done just as well with a Chromebook.

    Oh, Additional response:
I have one computer I purchased as an accessory to my ham radios, It needs to run programs that run under windows (it was Upgrade to win-10 #2) it too is an HP Stream.. but there is no story to tell here save that I wound up using it for other stuff and thus not for the radio.. So realizing I was only using it for Point and Click stuff, hardly ever touched the keyboad save for PIN entry, I got a nice little ChromeBook for $150.00 from Best Buy (Cyber Monday Deal)

Then I preapared for the hours long job of setting up a new computer.

Plugged it in and let it charge a while
    Turned it on
    Requestor popped up
    Default language: English
    Default Keyboard: ENglish (US)
Wi-Fi Node: Well there I had to hit the drop down and choose SNAFU.NET (yupm, that's my network name)

Clicked on the OK and another requester popped up The Wi-Fi Key
Copied that from Ms. Waite and (There is an encode filed called HELEN WAIT on selected devices,, If you want to know my passwords.. Go to helen Wait and decode her. alas, Only I know the code so good luck) I will only tell you that JACK is not the famous husband of Lotta).

Then it ask for my GOOGLE account name and password

And that, was the entire set up.. Took me longer to type this.

Suggestion: If you have a machine you use ONLY for web work, do not create and store documents of other types of files on it... CHROME BOOK is the way to go.

Ah Windows 10.. have done two upgrades to Windows 10 and one "out of the box" install... twice.

The last was/is a very nice HP, Got it black friday last year. Gave it to a young lady who needed a new computer (her decades old DELL is dying) and .. Well, long story follows

Got it all set up and working,,, Installed an APP (Virtual Fireplace Free) which is another story (May append if I do not forget) she shut it down, worked great for a few days then suddenly could not log in, had to reset to "out of the box" (Contact either manufacturer's support or Windows support We went with HP) and go the reset done.. I won't tell you how long it took but I took her to a very nice restaurant for dinner and still had to wait when we got back.. Got the Fireplace reinstalled, So for it's working well since.

    The fireplace story:
While setting it up she was talking about how she wanted a fireplace in her part of the house (2 stories she lives upstairs there is a Fireplace downstairs which she rents out to her brother and Sister-in-law) She kept going on and on about it.. So I installed the Free Fireplace from the Windows App Store.

Well she heard it crackling nicely and looked around. Finally she spotted it and this 60-something Woman reacted more like a 6 year old opening a much wanted Christmas Present (Very gleeful) Made all the cost and work well worth it let me tell you.. Her response was priceless.. BUT THAT IS NOT THE END.

She left the laptop, with the fireplace app running, on the table while she went down the hall and turned left (Directions to the most necessary of rooms in her house, also the directions to same room in a friend's house, but hey, not even close design wise)... When she returned the cats were all "Curled up in front of the firplace".. Yup, they like it too.

In fact she's going to have to make a keyboard shield cause "Kitten on Keys" may sound nice on a piano, but not so good on a computer. I have designed the shield (Slab of plywood with a couple of "Side" strips to hold it up) but she's not yet built it.
  • The previous owner was Michael Dell and he had it sitting on the shelf and never used it. :) :)

I just let it go on it own over night and this morning it had recovered with a message that it performed Windows 10 updates. Seems to me it should inform the new owner as to what is in progress as opposed to a black screen with a mouse pointer.
  • Was it originally a Windows 10 computer? Those upgraded to 10 often exhibited the same symptoms (mine included).
