I just got a new Canon laser printer that takes the 137 black toner. Considering the starter cartridge is about worthless I want to get a replacement. The search I did returned posts about refilling but not much on non-OEM cartridges. Are any of them reliable or like the HP ink refills? I paid $125.00 for the printer at a Costco on line sale and find toner is $100.00. There seems to be something wrong with values there.. Thanks.

No, they lure you in with the low price of the printer. Nowdays, you should look more at the cost of the toner than the cost of the printer. I remember this from 5 - 8 years ago at work. The IT dept paid for the printers because they were capital equipment. They liked the Dell printers because they were cheap - and because the user departments had to buy the toner cartridges because they were expense items, and very expensive.I seem to remember that Costco refills some of the cartridges. I have use non-OEM cartridges -- No problem.I have refilled cartridges. A small tool burns a hole in the top of the cartridge and you refill. Then put tape over the hole. Takes less than 5 minutes. Works as good as an OEM cartridge and only a few $.

I have have poor experience with refilled cartridges or non- original equipment cartridges. Yes, try the refill or aftermarket cartridges. If you are lucky, your printer will work well with them. Otherwise, you have to buy from the manufacturer. My local Staples store stopped carrying aftermarket, generic printer cartridges years ago. One of the employees there told me it wasn't to charge more, but they just had so many returns of the non-OEM cartridges they just gave up. Nice thing about laser printers is that the "full size" cartridges should last far longer than ink jet cartridges... so yes they are expensive, but you shouldn't have to be replacing them every few months. It is $50 to buy new inkjet cartridges for my bottom-of-the-line HP inkjet printer (which prints horrible with anything other than HP ink cartridges). That HP printer cost me $39 originally, lol! If a laser printer lasts 3, 4, or more times longer, then they are worth it. We just bought a new Brother multi function laser printer, and it came with "starter" laser cartridges. So I'll find out for myself how long they last, and how much fun it is buying new, full size cartridges. Which I am hoping will be rarely!

I also was having my cartridges filled at Costco but they got really picky about the cartridges I brought in. They would only fill one time and said I should bring them in as soon as possible for filling as they dried out too fast. It became too much of a hassle so I am looking at other sources.

It used to be when you bought a laser printer that the "starter" size would last about 3500 pages. Now that is considered a "regular" size and the "starter" size is about 1500 pages. I bought a Konica/Minolta laser printer about 10 years ago and you could get a toner cartridge that was rated for 12,000 pages.

Now they count the pages and start throwing up error messages when you reach the number of pages that the cartridge is rated for. The Brother printer we have would still print, but you had to clear a couple of error messages before every page. Still lots of toner, but basically unusable. There are some tricks to get around the page count on most printers if you seek them out. We were able to find out how to reset the page count and now we don't get the error messages and the print quality if still very good. This is on a B&W printer, not a color.

The high cost of HP toner is the main reason I don't buy HP printers.

Because some people have printers in there RV that use them for a long period of time. After we took out the original large TV and installed a flat screen, there was plenty of room for a printer behind it. Besides handy for printing info on places we want to visit for the next week, it's also handy for scanning receipts of work on the MH so we don't have to keep the paper copies floating around.

It relates to RVing as much as carrying an air compressor does. After reading the title of the post, why did you read the rest of it?

A few HP and Brother laser cartridges have a small "window" on one side that allows a beam of light or an electronic signal to shine through it when the toner is low enough to allow it. Putting a small piece of tape or placing a small piece of paper over the "window" allows you to continue printing with the cartridge until you just can't read it anymore and then you can change the cartridge. We did this at work to get the most out of our laser printers. Just offering up a tip to get more out of your carts.

For a $125 machine, you have little to lose by trying off-brand toner cartridges. If the machine doesn't print well with the stuff, oh well, buy a different brand printer that will do ok on generic toner.

I do quite a bit of printing in my small business. At one time, about 1400 pages/week... but now closer to 600/week. For many years I favored the Okidata LED page printers, but they did not like generic toner. Lately I've migrated to Brother printers, and they do fine with most generic cartridges. My 5370 doesn't seem to like the "Premium Compatibles" brand, though, so I stay away from it. For that Brother machine I mostly buy Xerox cartridges from Provantage.com, and they're less than half the cost of OEM. I've been buying toner from Provantage for over 20 years, and their prices are consistently good.

I always try to buy a printer that takes at least 6,000 to 8,000 page toner cartridges, because it works out to be much less expensive that way.

I have only 1 advice if you have a newer smart printer, they won't accept any ink carts but the OEM,....period. I learned the hard way. But if you think you can out smart it, get after it !!
