I don't think the 5c being "old" is as big a deal as Verizon overcharging you while calling it free. Check around on the best way to buy it - and glad you've made that decision. Storage space is a bigger issue than processing power. I need at least a 64GB device to handle apps, podcasts, music, etc. DW is fine with 16GB although the size of apps is driving the space requirement up. Things like Google Earth are cool but take up space.
I am not familiar with Android so I can't get first hand advice. What I like about iPhones is greater security in apps obtained through the app store. I know it's not absolute but there is build in protection. If you are carefuly, you can have the same security with a droid but I prefer not worrying about it. I do think it's easier to move files from a droid to computer but again no first hand experience.
