Another reason to go newer is eventually Apple locks older phones out on IOS updates due to processor requirements. This happened to my DW on a 4s. This matters because some banks, like USAA, may require security updates that require the latest IOS.
You get hit eventually but if you buy two year old technology, it will hit you before the phone is showing signs of age (battery life, etc.)
