permanent GPS track recording

Hi, I will travel from May thru Sep. through the United States.

I'm looking for a device, that continuously records the track that I'm driving, like a GPS logger that you carry around.

It should be totally maintenance free, mounted and wired. I don't want to think about it. All the track data should be uploaded to the internet, so that my friends and family at home can see where we are and where we have been.

As I like to have permanent access to the internet for other devices (smartphones, tablet) anyway, maybe there is a solution, where all devices (including the logger) can share the same internet access, like a Verizon MIFI.

  • James, you want something called an AVL or automatic vehicle locator (location), known to truckers as tattlers. They use cellular or satellite networks to constantly log gps location and speed data back to some central monitoring location.

You can get similar apps for android / iphone but they're not as reliable as a tattler

Here's a cheapy on a popular online auction site. wire it into your battery, plug in the antennas and a cheap GSM sim card and you're all set.
  • tracker

You need something like this shark has. Sorry, can't help you but couldn't resist.

When I read what you are looking for I thought of Mary Lee, this GW shark that has been tracked over many months. Obviously if it can be done for a shark you could do it. Problem is likely cost.

    Good luck.
  • Not going to happen! Have a great day.
If you want a record of your travels, set up one of the many mapping programs and enter your daily starting and stopping points. The roads in-between will be filled in automatically. I have every trip we have made from 2000 until today recorded on an out-of-date and no longer support program called TripMaker (Rand McNally) but you could do the same thing with something like Streets and Trips and likely others.
  • Many auto/truck/rv GPS units record track info. The question if they have enough memory to record the entire trip, with out being down-loaded, I don't know.
  • This would even be too much.
I don't nee continuous upload. The recording should be permanent.
The upload can happen when possible. I there's no cell coverage this can wait for hours or even the next day.
