Pocket Camera Suggestions

I have a Canon PowerShot SX260HS camera. It is pocket sized, has a 20X optical zoom, image stabilization, and takes nice pictures. Its downfall for me is that it is not dust resistant; pocket lint and lots of time in west Texas has put specks of dirt on interior surfaces of the lens that can't be cleaned, at least by me. The specks are getting more numerous, and are causing problems with image quality.

Ideal would be a similar, but waterproof/dustproof pocket camera. There are such, but the zooms on them are puny - like 2x.

Is there a camera, similar to the one I have now, that is at least dust resistant? Assume that money is no concern (but it is).

Thanks for any thoughts.

  • Panasonic Lumix! Check reviews at B&H Photo - nice camera - waterproof/dustproof, good internal zoom! ST
  • I use a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V. I don't know if you can still buy a new one or not. I Liked it so much, I bought a second Camera one (used).
The original camera hangs around my neck most of the time I'm riding my motorcycle ( at least 50,000 miles so far ).
The second camera is backup and stays in the saddlebag, with the extra battery and charger.

    Left hand only

  • Thanks for all the ideas - now I have some Christmas money that I have to spend.
  • Perhaps a Fuji XP120 Waterproof digital camera?

    HERE for $150

Got one for DD and DW liked it so well she bought one for herself.

Has 5X optical zoom and 10X digital zoom.

Optical zoom is limited because of the lens being sealed (IE no external moving parts to get stuck with lint, dirt, sand).

Other no sealed pocket cameras will have more optical zoom because of the longer moving lens.

This IS the only camera that my DD has not destroyed (can't tell kids anything) so you will have to work really hard at ruining this one.
  • Been using a Pentax for a few years now. Ricoh is now the label. It is waterproof, dust proof and fairly indestructable. I dropped it at fire scenes and then walked on it, no damage or problems. Good zoom and will focus down to pretty much touching the lense. The LEDs around the lens give good light for macro and the flash will flash multiple times if the scene is very dark.

The only down side is the battery size/life. I keep 4 batteries just in case.

  • I have had great luck with the Lumix waterproof models, 30', and the newer ones have more Pix now so better pics...

Here's a site that might help.

  • RVHiker,

We had similar issues and even lost and Olympus to dust/moisture. As much as I love my big Canon and get it out when it is safe, we have had a waterproof Fufi XP for some years and it has not failed us. It does not have stabilization or much zoom, but it doesn't seem to mind swimming. When it has gotten really dirty, I wash it before I open it.

I uses a proprietary battery that you can buy on E-bay and I put a cell phone screen protector on to save it from scratches. The screen is the only view finder.

    Good Luck

    Matt
