Rand McNally RVGPS

Camping World and Good sam have been promoting this GPS alot of late. As with any GPS, it has it's flaws. During a recent outing in Virginia, we decided to stop by the Camping World in Winchester, VA. I turned on my RVGPS and did a search for RV SERVICES/DEALERS in the Winchester Area. No Camping World location came up. Then I tried just a general search, and again, NO Camping World store was found.
As a matter of record, I updated my GPS within the last 2 months. We ended up using the local Gander Mountain location (located next to CW) for the accurate directions.

Think a product that CW and GS is promoting so much would be loaded with such information as store locations.

Not that impressive even with the visor it was poor and needed to move it into diffrent area to see it what a distraction!!!!!! Really expected something from the CARE TEAMon the cost of repair/replacement plan that is less than 50 days old.

We just returned from a 10,630 mile Alaska trip, It performed well if set up " to not avoid ferries and gravel roads". We like it. Not quite like our Gramin Nuvi, took a little getting used to, but worked well. We bought ours from TechnoRV.com at a better price at the time. Phil May, the TechnoRV owner, has an excellent training e-mail series to go with it.

We had our set up avoid the roads as you mentioned, but evidently the program didn't recognize some of our Arizona dirt roads as such.

Correct infor is that the 2nd unit would not work the 3rd is doing ok for now as I had to make a medical run back to Huntsville, A. so got to use ie and will see how it directs me back to the Camp Gulf C/G . Hope it carries me the short rout not the 40 miles out of the way the # 2 unit Did.

You know, if CW would even give me half of what I paid for it, I'd gladly trade it in for a NUVI. The poor routing is the worst. How was the display on yours in sunlight?

  • OHHHHHHHHHHHHH I am on my THIRD RVND 7720 7725 and on 09-21-13 got the 3urd one. the 2nd was got at Knoxville, Tn store but when I called they had 3 showing on the web sit but told me they had NONE, Well I drove there and went to the far back corner where they keep them hidden from view and ask if they had any " sure we have 3" said the unsuppecting Sales Manager (not sales associate) told him I wanted to look at it and he promply brought one from the back. Asked my frien with me to go back to the rig and get the bad one ( the screen had lined vertical top to bottom all the way across the screen), needless to say got a verrrry unplesant look and wa told to carry it to the front for exchange. Did , done, and brought it home silly ME!!! Now to September 3rd,2013 tried to program it for Camp Gulf, Sandestin Fl. and guess you know it would not take the zip code or address!!! IT WAS LOCKED and not by anything but the program. Called tech support told to run DIAG. on it and there were 68 errors in the program. 2 days later all was working till the 21st of Sept. when it would not direct me 1.7 mile to the grocery store (yes it found Winn-Dixie) and when in the parking lot still 1.7 miles left and went to CG still 1.7 miles to W/D and the next morning I was needing to make U Turn and go 1 mile back to store. Took it to C/W Crestview Florida and they were great but had to buy another protection plan for it. Number 3 plan in less than a year is my complaint, at $59.99 and the last one not even 2 months old. Just praying this one will work as well as a Garmin NUVI (5 years no problem)
  • As with any new product, finding out how to operate it can be frustrating. Being able to turn off the warnings for curves is there.

I too am finding it sometimes is very wrong.

It is frustrating when it keeps trying to send me back and around the route I am on.

That said. I LOVE being able to select "along the route or at the destination" several things such as rest stops, large fuel locations, campgrounds, rv services. This is a very advanced and easy to use feature.

As for seeing the screen I have had absolutely no issues. Often folks don't realize their dash needs to have a cover to reduce glare.

Way more positives than negatives. I have a Garmin Nuvi. Recently I have taken the Rand along in the toad because it has a better Point of Interest information system.

  • I recently purchased one of these GS GPS units from CW. It is the worst purchase I've ever made. Very poorly designed unit. Here's a list of my major issues:

    1. Screen is very difficult to see in daylight even with the purchase of an optional sunscreen.
    2. Set up instructions are terrible.
    3. Routed us on ridiculous routes that were way out of our way.
    4. Couldn't even find Petrified Forest even though we were only 20 miles from it.
    5. The unit kept trying to route us down tiny dirt roads when there were paved alternatives available.
    6. The first unit we received was defective right out of the box. Took it back to our local CW, but since they didn't have any in stock, we had to order another and pay shipping again.
    7. Even though you are on a mountain road with tons of curves, it takes the whole screen up for several seconds to warn you of a curve ahead. This is quite annoying.

I tried to take it back to our local CW for a refund, but since I didn't keep the original packaging, they wouldn't take it back. What a horrid purchase.
  • armyhockeynut,

Thank you for your post and great suggestion. I will forward this over to our team that works with our GPS system.
