Remote temperature alert

Excellent ideas/solutions are being put forward on this issue. I hope we receive more!

For heating system Honeywell makes a thermostat that will email you of problem and when logged into it you can change temperature settings.

We use this one

It monitors our sump pump, power loss, and temperature. We programmed it to call both of our cell phones. The funny thing is, we forget all about it, then when we get a call from our home number, we can't figure out what's going on, and hang up before the recording starts playing. :)


I don't think we've ever had a call for the temperature, but the other two functions work for sure.

Another thing we've done at a relative's house is plug a temperature controlled switch into an outlet by the kitchen window, and plug a clamp lamp into it. Clamped the lamp where it shines in plain sight of the window. When the house drops below the setting, the light comes on. Neighbor keeps an eye on it. I tried to find a link to what we used, but our internet is barely working at the moment. (Hope this post makes it through.)

Look at the SimpliSafe system. I've just installed their basic system (added sensors to have 3 temperature monitors and 2 water alarms) and I think it will do what you want also. I just saw there is 10% off today for Black Friday. Good luck!

Twelve years ago when we started snowbirding I home built a 10 channel analog input module that interfaces thermistors and door switches to a WinXP desktop. In the beginning it only dialed out on an alarm. Now, in addition to dialing out on alarm, it emails a status every midnight, a status when ever a door is opened and on a low temperature alarm.

Has it ever been required? Yes, I made the mistake of putting a bug screen over the combustion air inlet to our high efficiency furnace. On night in January there was a sudden drop in temperature outside, the bug screen frosted up and restricted the airflow to the point that the furnace stopped working.

Natively it uses a land line to call you, but it also will work (with the addition of a cellular gateway box) with any cell phone that has bluetooth. We have no landline anymore, so this is the solution we use. Cheap cell service with PagePlusCellular is $10 for 120 days.
