I've always had cases for my iPhones, but no screen protector. I can't stand them as they never look quite right. Even when I had an Otterbox, I tore out the screen protector before installing it.
I find iPhone glass quite scratch-proof and if it drops just the right way, it'll shatter with, or without the screen protector.
