Security Certificate expired

UPDATEA couple of times last week when I tried to go on line using IE I would get the following, "The security certificate presented by this website has expired or is not yet valid.". This morning it gives me that message no mater what program I try to open IE in. My home page is Yahoo.

I have an older Gateway desktop, model DX4840-37, with a Intel i5 processor and Win7 OS. I have turned off Windows Defender and currently use WebRoot from Best Buy with everything operating.

I tried changing my home page to Google and same error message, changed it again to RV.NET, same error message.

My HP laptop is working fine on Win10 but uses MS Edge and our netbook is fine on Wi Atom and Yahoo as home page.

We have both been retired since the '90s and the DW likes the features of Word Perfect 5X and Yahoo for a home page. She is trying to use Win10 on the laptop while we travel but doesn't like it. I don't like to upset her status quo so I keep the desktop as she likes it.

We have a geek squad maintenance plan so I can take it in for review but that takes a week and I have to backup all our data and hope they don't have to reformat. The only problem with a reformat is reloading my programs and some of them are older and don't want to reinstall anymore.

I plan on getting her a tablet for her birthday. Our youngest DD has an iPad and the DW likes it for traveling and to carry in her purse a various times. The iPad mini is on sale at BB for $350 and COSTCO has the Samsung tablets on sale for $160 for 8" Tab A, $290 for the 10" and $480 for the 9.5" 2S. The DW really likes the 8" for ease of transport when shopping and out of the S&B or RV. Her birthday is in three weeks and I really wanted to give it to her then. I can do it now I guess as we're long past the observance of birthdays on the exact dates.

So any at home things I can do to straighten out the desktop and any recommendatios on the tablets would be appreciated.

Another little tidbit, neither one of us has a smart phone. The date, the date, the date. Of course that was the problem earlier. To answer the other questions, every site was the same error message no matter what portal.

THE DARN DATE!!!!
  • Is the date correct on your computer?
Which portal do you use to sign in to the forum?
    Try getting to

  • I get that once and awhile I just click close sometimes have to do it a couple times seems to disappear just as quick as it appears

OK, now that you have fixed the date, I suspect due to age you may find the correct date disappearing again.. Causing the same error.

If this happens again, you will need to replace the CMOS battery. This battery keeps the on board clock AND all the BIOS settings for the system board.

Typically not a hard job to replace, this battery is typically a coin cell like a 2025, 2032 ect...

You will need to make sure the PC is turned off and unplugged, remove the battery (observe the polarity please) and replace with the same battery type.

Plug in and power up, you may get a CMOS error then a prompt to enter the CMOS.. You can edit the date and time in the CMOS and accept the default settings if asked then save the settings on exit of the CMOS menu.
