At the campsite?? The problem is the internet bandwidth that it needs. Can't rely on CG WiFi for obvious reasons, and it'll put your MiFi adapter data plan in the poor house. Not really a good idea for camping....

Using cellular for your Slingbox connection will cost you a ton of money unless you are amongst the tiny privileged few that still have some form of unlimited internet. Using campground wifi will likely not provide you with a usable connection.If you are parked in one place for the Winter and you can get a paid cable or DSL connection you might do just fine.

I use my Dish network sling box equipped Hopper DVR all the time......I rarely use my RV mounted Sat dish anymore......For me it's much simpler than aligning my manual roof top dish......just bring up my dish anywhere app and plug in the phone.......We watch NASCAR races, live TV and movies from my sling box........Netflix too....I do have an old Unlimited Verizon data plan.......last Thanksgiving week we used 18 gigs of data in 7 days....... Here on the west coast we have excellent 4G coverage.......sometimes in the 50+ MPS range.......makes for excellent TV streaming.......

I use mine a lot. Have an old 922 receiver.You must have a high speed connection at your home and your RV to work well.Like Eric, I also have one of the grandfathered Verizon unlimited data plans.To answer your question, we always connect HDMI to the TV.We do not watch on the phone, laptop or tablet.

Correct.

What I am facing is both my AppleTV and my Roku 3 only have
HDMI output jacks.

Those, of course, will not pass signal to many (all?) Slingbox models.

I think one of the options is a digital to analog converter boxes,
with HDMI inputs and RCA outputs.

Anyone had luck trying one of these?

Actually not using HDMI can prevent problems.

For example, the Slingbox M1 uses Component video, not HDMI, to get around possible DRM issues with HDMI.

A Wi-Fi router will not do this

A Wi-Fi hotspot on the cellular device might do this

I never use my phone as a router between devices
My phone does spend a lot of time being an access point for my android tablet and my Windows laptop
For in the RV networking I suggest using a dedicated Wi-Fi router between hard drives and pc's , . Printer etc

One caveat. I have seen some Wi-Fi cellular cards which act as hotspots, allowing for multiple machines to communicate with each other on the same network...

BUT they bill the LAN traffic the same they do the traffic going over the cellular (3G, 4G, LTE) network, even though not a single packet leaves the local network, so you can rack up an insane phone bill even though you never transferred anything remotely.

Some Wi-Fi access points do this, others don't, but it is worth checking this.

Actually, what I first said was about as clear as you can get:

Same Networks = little or no data used (apparently some "control" broadband data is used)

Different Networks = lots of broadband data used

. . . but let's make it even clearer . . .

SAME NETWORK -- No broadband data used (or very little)

DIFFERENT NETWORK -- lots broadband data used

If it goes over the internet from home to RV..then you ARE USING LOTS of cellular data

If the device you're streaming from and the device you're streaming to are on different networks, then, yes, you could end up using a lot of data.

However, if they are both on the same network, then, no, you won't use any sata.

As mentioned previously, you will use a bunch of data while streaming over the internet. Also you will need a high speed connection at both your home and in your RV.

I have a Hopper with Sling and use DISH Anywhere.

The new Slingbox M1 ($150) functions just like a Hopper with Sling, and the M1 is a better buy than Sling's $300 box. However, while the DiSH Anywhere iPhone, iPad, Android apps are free, the Sling apps about about $15.

I've found that slinging (or place shifting) is a great media option to have as it essentially allows you to view your TV programming on multiple devices (smartphones, tablets, computers) anywhere in the world . . . as long as you have a fairly speedy Internet connection.

By the way, when your Slingbox (or Hopper with Sling) and the receiving devices are on the same wireless network (like an RV hotspot), you don't burn up any broadband data.
