Straight Talk Phone Service

Thankfully our Verizon contract will be up soon. :) We are looking at Straight Talk and wondered if anyone has used this service and if so did it work well. We will be traveling to Virginia next Spring to volunteer at Philpott Lake. We were told Verizon works well there but we really don't want to renew our contract if Straight Talk will work. Thanks in advance for your help! Happy Trails to all!

  • We also have a Straight Talk phone. It is on the Sprint network & it sucks big time. Fine & dandy if you are in a good Sprint area but if you are traveling across the country don't try to use it far from major towns.

We also carry a Tracfone. That is on the Verizon network primarily. Works great but it is just a phone.
  • I use Straight Talk BYOD sim with a Galaxy ll AT&T phone, my wife uses a Straight Talk Verizon Proclaim Android phone. With this combination we get service everywhere (so far). Can't beat the price, and as long as you don't need customer service, and really how often do you need that, it is a great deal!

Exactly.....I found this out just before I ordered my Phone. I ended up with a Samsung(older model) smart phone that so far has been great for a beginner.

  • Straight Talk is over the Verizon network. Don't know if Straight Talk subscribers have access to all the network "bells and whistles" that Verizon customers do.

We use Walmart's Family Mobile service (on T-Mobile Network). We have had coverage issues when traveling in and out of Florida, think mainly because T-Mobile network is not as extensive and they apparently have fewer roaming agreements with other providers to fill in coverage gaps.
  • different models of straight talk phones use different networks. Be sure you get the one(s) that work on the verizon network.

If you don't need much data, check out Page Plus, a reseller of Verizon service. I use their plan for 250 minutes, 250 texts, and 10mb of data (warning...this is very low data allowance) for $12 per month, and this works well for me.

You may be able to port your existing Verizon phone to page plus.

  • I am typing this from a local campground on a straight talk smart phone that uses Verizon towers. Been on Straight Talk for about 4 months now. Service has been awesome. Wife's contract will be up next month and will be switching her over then. It seems to work fine for us.

When your contract with Verizon expires you can keep your service on a month to month basis for as long as you want without a price increase. My contract with Verizon expired years ago and I still have the same service, including broadband, without a price increase.
  • I also have just begun using straight talk(my first venture into a Smart Phone) and its on the Verizon network. So far so good......I had it with us on a 7 week trip and it worked in the area's it should have and not in the ones where No signal was available for anyone.
  • I have used Straight Talk phone service for the past two years as my primary phone. So far, it has been good service and trouble free, no matter where we were located. I would recommend it.
