Streets and Trips

We have Steets and Trips, the most current version, and it's almost never used.

Also have and use as a primary mapping tool, Delorme Topo North America. Have used it for years. Lots of nice features, but difficult to learn.

In the past six months, I've started using Garmin Base Camp. Love this software. But you HAVE to download the upgraded maps or it is of no value.

I pre plan our route for the nex day or days and then download them to the Garmin GPS. Every waypoint has been checked on the laptop, and I'm pretty sure there won't be any surprises.

Base Camp is free, but it's the most difficult of the three to learn, at least for me, but it's the best match for a Garmin GPS.

This allows the navigator to re-route before it is an issue. It also provides a hotspot to allow us to search the area for other items of interest. We have found more than a few that were not in the guide books.

And all this works underway and takes so much stress out of traveling that it is a joy.

I have been using Microsoft Streets & Trips for many years and will continue using it for a while. I tried DeLorme Street Atlas once and didn't care for it.

We have it on both our computers -- bought one copy years ago.

In theory google earth with a gps antenna can work, but one would have to have an active cell phone hotspot. The pro version is now free.

Delorme has an offline map program. It is a bit more expensive than streets and trips. It is possible to export any saved maps into the Delorme program.

I have a Arcer netbook laptop 11" screen and it works good in my tundra truck, I also have a 7" tablet with a GPS that I use at times, I made a custom mount for them that works great.
Thank for reports on your trips and the photos.

The closest is Street Atlas. I liked it better, however it does have a bit steeper "learning curve". Since I now travel in a small tow vehicle, I prefer to use a stand alone GPS rather than a laptop for navigation.

It's so sad this program is discontinued...

It's a great program and I have not found anything that is as useful while "offline".

Has anyone found a suitable offline substitute for S&T?
