I'm looking into getting a camera system. I'm getting motion spot lights as well as motion sensors with an alarm. I want the camera system to record and be online so I can view it anywhere from my cellphone. They have ethernet cables that hook from the DVR to a modem. My question is, can that ethernet cord work from my ethernet plug in my laptop? We are using the campgrounds wifi and don't have a modem. I know there is an alternative which is a smart camera, but they are about $200-400 for just one camera. They have a built in DVR and work off wifi instead of having to be hardwired. Is it possible to hook the DVR to my laptop and get internet recording that way? Anyone have a system that works differently or doesn't have to have a modem for it to work? Thanks in advance.

Most likely not. You need to hook it up to a router.

Settles that then. Guess if I want a camera to view on the net it's going to have to be a smart cam.

There have been several threads on rv.net about whether people have had stuff stolen from them in a campground. Most of the responders either had nothing stolen or minor instances of beer being taken from their outside coolers or the like. Some report that raccoons, squirrels, or ravens had "stolen" food from the table.

Ask others about theft while at a campground.

Just 2 weeks ago my wife's family came to visit. They stayed at a highly secured campground where there's someone at the gate. You need a special card to scan to get through and if you don't have a card you have to use the phone in front of you to call the office to see if they will let you in and who you're visiting. Anyways, a CG that secure, they had their tow straps stolen. Straps that held their car on the tow dolly. Just because you haven't had anything stolen, doesn't mean the next person won't.

I don't think they did. Her dad said he left them right "there" and left to go eat and returned and they were gone. They would only take their car off the dolly once they were parked so they could only be one place. They left having to buy another one and still haven't seen them. I really don't think he misplaced something like that though.

But doesn't it still have to be connected to a modem/router? I read this on that website.

Well, I'm using the CG wifi, so I won't have a router to plug into. Am I reading this wrong or is the system you sent me a link of work the same way as others we've been discussing where you MUST plug it into a router? Thanks!

Ok, to everyone else who said, "It won't work unless it's plugged into the modem/router" I have a question. I just called the tech support on the link above. The guy said that I can plug the ethernet cord to my laptop and have internet and start recording. He said the only downside to that is that I would have to keep the computer running in order to record videos, (well duh, expected that.) Now tell me what the difference in the security systems in this link vs the ones you're talking about?

I am not sure so many people are giving the OP such a hard time. Stuff gets stolen at RV Parks on a regular basis. Maybe only small stuff and maybe not, but it certainly does happen. I don't know of any RV park owner that would deny that. Also, security is something not to be taken for granted. If you "assume" everyone else is an angel and leave all your stuff up for grabs, someone's going to grab it.
I think the OP asked a logical and interesting question and I hope folks will try to stay focused on why he can or cannot do what he would like. How could he know that what he wants to do would have a very bad effect on a campground wifi system unless someone gives him a reasonable and logical response. He's here to learn and asking good questions.

I use a CloudCam inside my RV to monitor my dogs while I'm away.

It works wirelessly with my Verizon 3G/4G WiFi hotspot. No static IP address required. Plus a built-in SD card allows you to record video.

I can view video from my CloudCam on my iPhone anywhere (as long as my iPhone has an Internet connection). Bandwidth use is nominal unless you constantly view it.

I think CloudCam also has outdoor cameras.
