Tap to pay

Anyone doing Tap to Pay (tap & pay) with Google wallet on an HTC one? (or any phone)

I just can't get it to work. Internet is on, NFC on, wallet is on, money in wallet, clerk activates. No response when I drag or tap the phone on the little pad. Been through all the google help I can find, Verizon store dummies don't know.

Yes, I'm aware that there will be hackers in the store just waiting to drain my account and hack my wifi.

If the cashier says people have been using it regularly and you still don't connect you might have been stuck with a bad NFC chip in your phone. Good luck!
Only tried McDs, and so far no workie. Cashier says folks do use it.
  • If you have an HTC One M8 (and presumably the M7 & M9s are similar) the sensor is near the camera lens. Use that as a target.

Have you used NFC before with that phone at all?
  • Have Verizon's 800# double check that your SIM card is a "secure" sim card. The first sim I received with my phone did not support tap to pay, and they sent a free replacement secure sim

it sounds dumb, but try holding the phone in another direction above the reader. at the local gas station, my phone only works in certain directions.

some tag readers are very slow, probably on purpose... try holding the phone over the reader for several seconds

oh, something else, if you have a case on your phone, remove it. the NFC signal is very very weak on purpose, sometimes the case can interfere
  • Have you been successful using it anywhere? If not, my next step would be to try to determine whether or not I'm making an NFC connection.

That's two-fold. You must be using a good NFC terminal, and the chip in your phone must be good. I wouldn't trust that just having an NFC terminal means it is turned on. In a large company it might be turned off for all locations without the cashier even knowing it. Ask the cashier if anyone else has been able to use tap and pay or Apple pay. That will help you determine if the store's terminal is functioning correctly. Maybe go to a location that might be more of a sure thing like McDonalds. (I haven't been to one for over a decade, but I would be willing to get something there just to test NFC.)

  • Trouble trying to tap and pay

Here are some things you can try when experiencing tap and pay issues:

-Verify that NFC is enabled on your phone.
-Make sure the back of your phone is against the terminal.
-Ask the merchant to ensure that the terminal is turned on and working properly.
-You may need to tap your device to the terminal again.
-If prompted for a PIN at the terminal, enter your Wallet PIN.
-You'll need a network connection once a day to tap and pay and to enter your Wallet PIN before each purchase if you've set a timeout.
-If tap was unsuccessful, your payment card or Wallet Balance will not be used.
-Please ensure that your payment card is not expired.
  • This won't help but I found a place the other day that still took cash.

Yes, the phone is on and ready to go. Google wallet is ready too.
