I don't really use my old iPod for anything much anymore other than music and audiobooks. We keep it connected to the daily driver vehicle all the time now and it stays charged and available through the dash stereo while living safely out of sight.
We prefer an iPad for the camper, and on that we have movies (both home travel movies and commercial flicks), music, and a few games. I actually prefer reading on a Kindle eInk because the screen has far less glare and the battery lasts weeks on a single charge. I originally thought that I would do a lot more with the iPod than I ended up actually using it for, and after getting an iPad when they first came out, I can't imagine how anyone could read much of anything on the small screen of an iPod, but that's just me. If he has problems seeing on the small screen, perhaps an older iPad would be a good upgrade for him (and he won't lose anything because the iPad can run all the same things the iPod can, plus a good deal more)
