Using Dish Tailgator cube

Nearing the end now of a second 5K+ trip using the Tailgator dish. Some observations. Fist, recently someone posted asking about coating the Tailgator with No-Wet to help rainfade with the Tailgator. I responded that rainfade is from a storm between the unit and the satellite. True, but I have also noticed the unit gets dust, etc on it, thus rain does not run off as it should. Upon cleaning it and putting rainex on it, my signal strength has gome up considerably.

Second, getting the locals changed has not always gone smoothly, sometimes it has. Depends on the tech doing it. Some tips: make sure they only change the service address, not the billing address also. They only need the new zip and city to do this in case you do not have an actual street address.

Third: be sure to tell the rep to send an authorization to your receiver as well as changing the address info in their computer. This is most important and not all techs seem to know to do this. I repeat it several times during the conversation. It usually only takes less than 5 minutes for the switch to take effect. Be sure to ask what channel numbers and what networks they are while you have the tech on the line.

Fourth: You will have to download the program info again after the new locals are received. You will have downloaded the program info doring the initial setup, but the new locals obviously will not be included in that.

When pluging in the receiver give it a few minutes before attempting to do anything. Turn it off wait a bit, then turn it on and you should get the setup screen. Go to the aim dish screen (push 6-1-1 on the menu screen), and change the zip code to the same one you gave the dish tech.

Often after aiming the dish, aquiring the signal, and dowloading the program guide, you will get a "complete signal loss" screen. Just unplug the receiver 10+ seconds, and repeat the aiming/scanning process.

All in all, most pleased with the service and the hardware. Easy to set up, decent picture but no HD just SD. For $7 a month added to our home dish bill, a real bargain.

When boondocking without electricity, a 150w inverter easily handles the receiver.

Now that I have learned these things thru much frustration, I hope it helps someone else.

If I use the Tailgater antenna and receiver on just the PAYG plan (have cable at home), can I still get the local channels?

If your package you buy includes them you should be able to. You will have to call them when you move out of range of the locals you currently have and give them a new address to get the locals spot beamed to that area.
  • No HD? I get HD with my tailgator. At first I did not until I realized that I was not using a HDMI cable from the box to the television, but now my picture is beautiful.!

  • Good information. This year we did not travel outside Indiana, but did travel all the way North and all the way South and still able to get our local stations. For example, one local Indianapolis station is WTHR (Channel 13 - NBC). What I did at home, I captured the Satallite number and Transponder number for that station. After the initial set-up, if Channel 13 does not come through, I'll go to the 611 set-up, manually change the Satallite and Transponder number and then go to Channel 13, and it comes in, no problem. Here again, I'm not "that" far out of my local range, and have not tried this 300 plus miles from home. But so far, this is working OK for Indianapolis locals.

Sometimes I think I should have a hole through the trees, but I really need to get a better compass. It's not accurate. So after I move the Tailgater a few time, I always get a signal.

Have any of you had issues with no reception in heavily forested campgrounds? That is my problem. I take my rig out once a month and the Dish only works about 50% of the time. I bought a Terk Amplified Antenna as a backup. However, you have to be within 30 miles of a station for it to work. So my Dish works fine, when it works.

So far I have always been able to find a hole in the trees for signal. When I am at a campground that I want to return to, I will scout all the campsites and write down the site numbers that appear to have a viewable opening.
If it is the first time at a campground and sites are assigned at the office, I always ask for a site suitable for sat. They generally know which ones will work and which ones will not. But they usually also say if my site is not sat worthy, then find an empty one that is, call them, and they will reassign us if it is not already assigned.
But there are places where it is near impossible.
  • I have a satellite aiming device from our full timing days and use it first before setting the cube. Once I put in the local zip code and get the angles, I do a sighting to find an open spot. I have shot some tight spots that way. To find a open area I use the old azimuth compass type thing to get a general idea if the spot will work or not.

  • I use directv in the house and dish in the TT because I got tired of moving the box. When I want to change the locals I don't call I use the chat function on the dish web site. I put in the zip code aim the dish let it download the guide then go on line and ask them to change the location, after about 5 min the locals show up on the guide.
  • Our experience pretty much the same as yours. Occasional small glitches, but mostly very good experience.
When I do not know the street address of our location, I just tell them 100 highway xxx (the closest highway to where we are). That seems to satisfy the rep.
Not sure why you do not get HD. We do for the same $7/mo to the home account.
