Verizon $5/mo renew method has changed?

Two years ago I got one of the $5/mo Verizon 3G Mifi units on eBay. Has worked great. However, just tried the phone number I've always used to renew it for another month and it wants to connect me to an operator to help me. Previously I just keyed in the info.

Anybody else still using these and what phone number do you use? I've used 888-294-6804 since I got it.

I'm a bit worried this is the end of this "special" plan.

Thanks,
  • I just called the 6804 number and got the same new "no PIN option". Tried 4646 number mentioned above, which I've never used before. I entered my Mifi phone number and it tells me I'm on the $15 plan and to make a payment now. Since I've been paying $5, I decided to wait another day or 2 and see if the 6804 number starts to work like it used to. My unit expires in 2 days, so I need to do something. I guess I'll use CallingMart if needed, but wonder what will happen if I pay $5 through CM and my unit REALLY needs $15?

BTW, the eBay seller told me to "try a few times" when I reported the old number isn't working as usual He is still selling $5/mo units, so one would think that plan is still available.
  • 5/28/2018 - I called the Jet Pack refill number(888) 294-6804), got the normal answer, then the “speak Spanish” Prompt. Instead of asking for my MiFI number, there is a clicking sound, then it dials a number which asks “what can we do for you?”. (I tried this 5 times with the same result). I say data refill, it doesn’t like it and prompts me for my pin. The problem is they want the PIN for my cell phone (5680) not the MiFi. I hung up each time. I waited about an hour and then called the refill number again. This time it worked as usual and asked for the MiFi number and then the code from the card. I gave it the $5 card and it took it, said my balance was $15 but my renewal date was still the next day. I called back after a few days and got the next renewal date.

My next renewal is due 6/29 and now you have me worried. I attributed my trouble to a Verizon computer error during a three day weekend where support staff were non existent. I sure hope it isn't a permanent thing.
  • Thanks for the info. I've been using CallingMart to get PIN numbers to do a "self renew", but didn't know they could post the payment to a number themselves. Will try that.

Would still like a way to call and find out what the expiration date is, though. Maybe the "old way" will suddenly reappear on the original number. :)

Yes, I specifically didn't talk to VZ about this for fear of cancellation. :)

    Thanks,
    Ralph
  • I just checked both 888-294-6804 and 877-807-4646 and the options have changed. There appears to be no option to pay with a PIN. As mentioned above, go to CallingMart Verizon Inpulse Refill - RTR and buy the $5.00 refill. You will be prompted to enter the phone number of your MiFi. If you have not purchased from them before, they will first verify that you exist, usually by calling you. After the initial purchase, you can set up AutoPay. Here's a link to a YouTube video by jimindenver describing how to set up AutoPay:

    He's talking about a 4G account but it's the same for a 3G account.

    WARNING !!!!
Never contact Verizon. They most likely will close your account.
  • I had an older, inexpensive plan with Verizon for over ten years. Suddenly, it nearly doubled. Store can no longer address $$$ questions, you have to call a number. I did, after three months, I gave up trying.

I'm now a T-Mobile customer ... occasionally, I get a "collections call" from Verizon now, for the over-billing. I ignore it, just like Verizon did my calls - I only got recordings. It threatened me with posting it on my credit report - with a recording, not a person. My CR is so high it would take ten Verizon's to move the dial. I answer the Verizon phone calls now just as often as it did mine. Never.
  • Hi—like you, our experience with these devices and plans are similar. I was finally successful in being able to renew mine by using a third party service, www.callingmart.com. You can do a one-time pay or you can set it up to renew automatically once a month. Hope this helps.

Verizion is known for cancelling low cost plans and gouging, one of the lesser reasons I don't use 'em.. Cuss-Some-more-(non)Service is the big reason.
  • My OPINION is that plans come and go. Especially with the merging, proposed merging and competition all these carriers are experiencing.

If the phone number doesn't work, there are, to me, two options:

1- Talk to the operator they want to connect you to. (Probably a salesperson)

2- Go to a VERIZON store and make inquiries.

    g'luck !
