Verizon WiFi overcharge?

I've had Verizon hotspot for over five years - the 5G allowance.

This month I got a over/alert at about two weeks ... and I've only done that twice before in five years (and one had a reason, knew it).

But this time, I have no clue why suddenly this overage hit. Can anyone explain how I can refute this with Verizon, or how I can tell what is causing it if it's real ... as I never use it more or less each month, usually.

I never download movies, never watch videos, or never allow 'clips' to play on sites I visit.

When I look at my use gauge, it shows 4.56G in the last 45 days, not 5G in two weeks?

My basic question? How can I tell what is using more bandwidth, or can I even tell ...

I looked at my usage meter - have been neglecting it as we're been on the road and plenty of days w/o service.
    Look at their usage meter.

My dumb question? Why is there's different than mine? It's the Verizon meter on my hotspot access screen.

But the bigger question to me, why does my usage change so drastically when my hotspot use remains similar each month for five years. I surf the web, I email, and that's it NO videos, no download (well, I control it, I hope).

But, what I need to figure out is why it changed ... that's three times in this year, after five or so years with less than half-use per month in the past. So, something has changed - maybe bigger more complex web pages? So, more usage for the same time surfing?

I know, it's not TIME, it's bandwidth - but bigger, more complex pages might increase the bandwidth use for the same amount of time spent online. Could that be true?

Or, maybe the constant 'updating' of pages while you read it (like the news) - that might be true also.

I don't know, we don't know, that's why you should look at it.
  • If you have an ipad, there are a lot of apps that are running in the background that I was not aware of until traveling this last summer, I, also, received notice of reaching the limit of 5G. NEVER has that happen before. Now before I close the ipad while traveling, I turn off the WIFI signal on it .

There is no difference between what you will see on the Verizon website and your My Verizon app on your phone. The numbers will be exactly the same. You just have to click on the icon to get the update info. No need for web access.

Then why is he being overcharged? It's not like we're talking about a lot of effort here.

You can easily turn those apps off. Click the home button twice to bring them up at the bottom of the screen. Then click and HOLD on one, the once they start to wiggle you can close them out.

    Not what he is asking
it has nothing to do with a phone
his 'wifi hotspot/MiFi' has an info / setup screen to be accessed by his laptop browser ( just like Any Router ), it is NOT a phone hotspot , No APP on Phone, No phone

that is the useage meter info he is talking about
yes he should check the VZW website, it should be close to the same
most likely it will NOT be the same , because he is getting 'Notices' from VZW

that is the problem, there is either a malfunction in the mifi, not reporting useage,
    OR
there is a Malfunction at VZW billing
unless of course somebody has cloned his device or hacked his account

Monkey ask VZW tech service to check which towers show data access and whether it matches locations you have been camped and using the hotspot
  • Yes, thanks for all the comments - we're home now, and will call - we've been on the road for awhile. Didn't want to call then, because half the time, we have no consistent cell, and after half a discussion, we lose service and have to begin again.

    Yes, you're right Mr Wizard - it's not a phone with apps - it's a hotspot WIFI.
So, should have some kind of answer from Verizon tomorrow. Good idea to check the towers - we're been all over, but certainly know where and when. We have a travel log that tells us each day - although I doubt if it will be that complex or require it.

I'm less concerned about the actual costs, as the answer - why does my bill jump so high with out me using more time/service a month. Don't mind paying for service if I use it, but am a little picky about paying for a mistake.

Thanks you all - will follow up when I know something.
