The simple answer is NO, there is not. Some folks are happy with Millenicom where you 20GB for $90/month but you would need to use very close to 20GB every month to make it worthwhile. There are better, lower cost, options if you sometimes use less.
If you need more then it $180/month for 40GB, $270/month for 60GB.......
  • For 50gb/month, you'll need 2 - 3 hotspot accounts. It won't be inexpensive. While you're right that technology has advanced quickly, cellular data demand has exploded, causing the wireless network to choke in areas of heavy use.

Just try to access data networks at a major sporting event and you'll know what I mean. Cellular infrastructure has not kept pace with demand. As a result, all wireless carriers have implemented procedures to limit usage. Even those that "claim" unlimited data plans now throttle speeds on the biggest users, whether on grandfathered unlimited plans or not.

Personally, I don't see this changing anytime soon. Cellular bandwidth is expensive, given the vast area of the US. As long as demand expands so much, wireless companies will not keep up. Expect prices to rise.... :-(
  • We get by with about 20 MB per month. We live very rural an not any hard line options. We conserve by killing the news articles that flash all the photos that I don't need and get "news my way". Do banking and email.

I suspect it won't be too far in the future when everybody will be buying internet time by the MB. Streaming video & games use up a lot of time. Netflix is fighting it but doubt they will win.
  • You are talking about WiFi for TV for watching Netflix and such? If so, You will need a lot. When I was sent to engineer school in Atlanta, the hotel I was put up in had terrible WiFi. Luckily, my rooted phone and unlimited data (at that time) proved valuable. I used 30 to 40 GB of data that month, and I didn't watch much Netflix.

Many companies offer WiFi hotspots which connect to their cellular network. Cost goes up as a company that has more coverage, reliability, and speed goes up. A lot of people talk about the Wally World hotspot, so that is one to look into. I personally like Verizon, as they have proven to me to be reliable and great coverage.

Pretty much 99% of mobile WIFI will be cell-tower based, including what comes in some of the fancier new cars. Data caps are pretty common, but some carriers DO offer unlimited (though it's probably not REALLY unlimited, there's usually some contract clause for throttling, suspending, or canceling you, if you use too much in a month). I have "unlimited" from Sprint and am reasonably happy, but Verizon (no unlimited plans) has MUCH better coverage, and it's generally the one you see recommended the most.

The other 1% would be satellite, it's slow (500-1000ms typical latency), it has expensive monthly fees, it has ridiculous data caps (250mb/day is pretty common), and it's quite complicated requiring professional installation, and super expensive equipment (sometimes included or leased with long term contract), however it works everywhere you can see the southern sky.
