If a Driver is corrupt the device simply will not work at all, Windows device manager will show a big yellow ! for that device.
Now it is possible that the SOFTWARE INTERFACE (which is separate from the drivers) could have been corrupted but in the OP's case I doubt that since they are able to run the Software interface and see signal strength..
