Windows 10 Updates

Almost every time Windows 10 automatically installs an update, I have problems..Has anyone used the Windows Update Blocker program to stop them from automatically updating at the most inopportune time?
  • I learned a few things lately. It's best to never ask windows to update. If you do, Microsoft's brands you as a "seeker" or some such term, and will then force beta updates on you, the kind that wreak havoc like we've seen lately. Updates come labeled B,C, and D, which reflects the 3 last weeks of the month. B, or the second week, are the most important(security), and C and D for the 3rd and 4th less so(quality, or feature updates perhaps). If you are on Windows 7, there is an app called Never10, which will absolutely block any attempt by them to force 10 on you. If your on Windows 10 and you want to completely stop all their telemetry and spy processes, there is another app called Shutup10. Shutup10 is just an .exe app and doesn't even need to be downloaded, but you may need to run it again after updates. Both the fore mentioned apps are made by respected developers, and are not themselves spyware of any sort.

Since I believe the update is coming from a "trusted source", I have found turning off my firewall makes the installations go much smoother. I'm sure the possibility of getting a bug by doing that is there but as soon as the "trusted" update is done I turn the firewall back on after reboot.

If you are using the Windows firewall, no need to turn it off for updates. It is already programmed with exceptions for the Windows Update service.

On the flipside of that security coin, anyone is using a 3rd party antivirus, it might be a good idea to temporarily disable it before doing updates. I have seen that cause plenty of problems.

  • Metered connection should help, it will eliminate the optional updates, but windows will still force security and critical updates on you.

you can defer all updates, under advanced settings, however that expires and must be renewed manually

the updates that cause big problems for most are the six month (roughly) "feature" updates, last one was this month, next will be in the spring.
  • I changed my "active hours" so that the computer updates when I am sleeping - made a world of difference for me.
  • Have you tried changing your connection status to "metered connection"?
This will disable automatice update downloads until you authorize them.

I too cringe eveytime one comes through haha... Doesn't cause problems all the time but sometimes it will hehe...

The biggest thing it does here for is closed out most of my cookies which means my passwords don't work haha...

I need to make up a sign-in list for all of my affected forums etcs…
