I have had to inform quite a few disappointed clients that their email and contacts were gone due to a hard drive crash.

You are correct, it's ironic that the pendulum has swung back to the "mainframe" model. In the "early computing days" there were no clients, only dumb terminals. Storage had nothing to do with it. The cloud is much more than a remote storage device, it is a remote computing device also.
