Wireless Microphone for Nikon D7100

Hi there everyone,

DW and I full time in the Sacramento area and Volunteer for a dog rescue. We are working on putting together some short videos in order to improve adoptions and recruit volunteers. We have a Nikon D7100 that we use to take the photo's and videos. We are looking for a wireless microphone set up that works well with this sort of gear. There are some out there for $150 and others for almost $1,000. We're a non-profit, so we don't have cash to burn, but we don't want a piece of******either.

Also, the camera records in stereo, so we aren't sure if we should be looking for a set up that allows for stereo wireless gear or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! - Eric -

Read some of his posts; he's a know-it-all sandwich who sprinkles in little snide remarks on a regular basis...yet another internet tough guy from behind the keyboard who's probably 100% non-confrontational when it comes to face-to-face communication.

He's angry about something. Don't let him pull you in.

Apologies to the OP for being off-topic.

    you got me. ;)

  • Sorry Bumpyroad was that your attempt at a constructive comment? The OP paid $1100 for a camera when a $300 P&S will do video with sound. The OP also stated that they did not want a piece of *******. Do you really think that someone who spent $1100 on a camera to shoot video will have a problem spending $125 to get decent sound? You also might let the OP poster respond unless you are bored and feel the need to respond even when you have nothing of value to add.

Pro level microphones alone with nothing extra like cables, amp, dead cat, etc. will cost over $800 and for the OP's use will not work as well as the lavalier setup. If you are bored Bumpy you might spend a few minutes checking out the cost of a pro setup as it is not that difficult to do and you might actually learn something. What a concept!
  • did I miss something? I thought the OP was just going to take some videos of dogs available for adoption, not stage a screen play.?

  • The best mics will use a mini male phone connector and the D7100 has a mic port for just this purpose. I would start by trying out the stereo mic in the camera.

For shooting videos we get the best results by using an inexpensive wireless lavalier mic and a receiver with the receiver jacked into the camera. The one we use is a Audio Technica Pro 88W /R that cost $125 at B&H. Excellent sound and the lavalier is a cardioid type so it is semi-directional and picks up less ambient noise. It is VHF and has a range of more than 100'.

This kind of setup works the best as it puts the mic right where you want it and that is seldom at the camera.
  • for your stated use I wouldn't think that stereo would be necessary or required and would only increase the price.
