Yuma Internet

Can anyone recommend the best internet service provider in the Yuma area?

We have AT&T iPhone hotspot tethering for the road, but I am thinking of the stationary three months or so that we will be in the Foothills.

Does anyone have experience with broadband cable? How does it compare with DSL?

We have Century Link with DSL here in Oregon, but they aren't very forthcoming on the phone about options and costs in Yuma! Does anyone who uses them have experience with shutting off service at their home base and turning it on in Yuma?

Any info would be appreciated.

  • Does anyone have experience with Century Link? Since that is what I have at home, I would think it would be possible and cost effective to simply turn it off here and on in Yuma. But getting info in advance over the phone is like pulling teeth!

A general rant: Why aren't telecom companies regulated better? One would think it would be to their advantage to be a bit more informative. They never seem to offer clear information about their plans, so it is impossible to make an informed choice. And have you noticed that they all tout speeds "up to" some given amount? The phrase should be "at least". Too bad we don't have a federal Consumer Affairs Department with some real teeth!

P.S. to Bill.Satellite: You keep suggesting that I compare the offerings of various companies in the Yuma area. Well, that is precisely what I am doing with my posting here: looking for advice from folks who have been through the experience and so know what they are talking about!

We use BEAM SPEED Wireless Internet . They come out and put a small box on the outside of your house, run the cable to your computer and your up and running. You can sign up for a month at a time or however long your going to be there. Then in April they remove the "guts' inside the box until you come back the following season. Cost is $40.00 a month but well worth it. Mine is very fast as I have a clear path to the mountain where the sat is Phone number is 928 343 0300 . I do not work for them ,just a happy customer. They mounted the box on my friends 38 ft 5th w ladder yesterday

This is interesting. Is it satellite service?

Since "very fast" is a relative term, what upload and download speeds do you get with this if you run Speedtest.net?

Here is one option for the Foothills.

Your link is to Excede satellite internet service. Assuming you have 3G or 4G service available in Yuma you will be better off this that. If any form of DSL, Cable or other land based service is available you will be even farther ahead than either. You just have to make the comparisons between the services available at your location and make an informed choice. Despite claimed speeds, satellite internet is going to be slower than any other service offering half the stated speeds due to the high latency involved with satellite internet.

My best guess would be that you will have to talk to the park owners where you plan to stay to see what, if any, options are available at that park. You can't just randomly select a provider and then have it magically work where ever you park.

I should have been more detailed. We own a park model on a private lot in the Foothills, so what I am asking about is home service.

Not all service providers service all properties. You need to find out which services are available at your lot and then you might be able to get opinions from users of that/those services before you make a selection.

"Broadband" is an umbrella term for high speed internet. Depending on the provider's speed offerings, DSL or cable could be faster. Many providers will offer "standard" speeds and then higher speeds for a premium price.

If you know where you'll be staying, find out which cable company and/or phone company services the campground and then contact them to see what speeds they offer and if it's available at individual sites.

Yes, I do understand the term "broadband." What I was asking for is a comparison of broadband CABLE to broadband DSL.
