Good news is that there was no one behind us, so the line length was "just me" and I wasn't in any hurry. I genuinely wanted to know if I should expect about 5 mins a vehicle or more.
He just reminded me of those folks we all get behind in the grocery store. The ones that wait until all of their groceries are bagged and *then* they'll put out their checkbook.
Me, I have everything on the check filled in, and ready except the amount. Driver's license ready to go. :)
Don't you just hate waiting behind someone using a check?
I mean, you may see some of them think they are being faster by having the check filled out minus the amount and getting out their drivers license, but really, in this day and age?
They have to write out the amount in two places (one numerical, the other text) and hand the check and DL to the clerk. The clerk has to select pay by check on their console, and either has to verify the DL number on the check or write it on there, verify the amount, enter it on their console, then put it into their MICR reader that takes 4 or 5 passes assuming it can read the check, and then it prints their info on the check. If they are using electronic check conversion, the clerk has to hand the check back to them, and their information was taken just as if they had used a debit card but in a much longer transaction. Plus, their printed account numbers, DL number, address, name and other information is just sitting there waiting to be stolen.
Using a debit card requires swiping the card, entering a 4 digit PIN, and pushing yes or selecting cash back and entering the amount and hitting enter. It's so much faster.
If they aren't comfortable with that, they can use one of the new credit cards with a chip. Insert it into the reader, 5 to 10 seconds later you are walking to the door.
Or you can just sit back and think of them like the person at the dump station. :)
