Contrary to what those who don't have one will say, to me it has nothing to do with NEEDING to stop for fuel. Or, really even saving $ (although it does that(. To me the biggest thing is it allows me to stop when and where I want to stop. And that is avoiding nasty truck stops, and tight local fuel stations. Drive ALL day long, get to where you are going, drop the trailer, and fill up if you need to. Or wait until the next day.
There you go. It's called Peace of Mind.
I stop when I want to and WHERE I want to. No truck stops. No wigglng into a gas station where I may or may not fit. No stopping at a place because it's the only station around. I fill up after I set up my camper. I still make bathroom breaks too. Just not at truck stops.
Do the math - 11 mpg x tank size. Then consider you will want to look for fuel NLT about the 3/4 mark. When both tanks are full on my truck I have at least an 850-900 mile towing range, IF NEEDED.
I got an RDS combo 40 gallon/tool box with gravity feed. Simple is good.
Check Northern Tools for RDS boxes. Or go to the RDS site - they have a zillion different sizes. They really are not all that expensive.
Last - This subject gets discussed all the time here. Just do a search.
