Best that two of you sleep a night or two on the sofa to see how it feels. Adding a foam topper would make it more comfortable but would the size work for two? Plus, you'd have to have space to store the topper. You'd also need space to store the bedding each day.
You could also have the two guests use a tent on your site. Also, some campgrounds have a cabin to rent for guests. How often will these 'guests' come along. If it's uncomfortable for them it might not be often. :)
For the cabover if your son doesn't complain, leave the mattress as is. I would use a fitted sheet to protect the mattress although those areas are a pain to make up. A comforter is easy and decorative. I agree with mounting a small fan for ventilation.
