Converter Location

I am a new RV owner, and a rookie at RVs. I have a 1977 Chevy Delta 23 ft Class C, and I plugged it in and had the generator on at the same time and now I can not use the electric when I plug in to 110 volt, it blows fuses and none of the it appliances work for very long on the battery reserve. It still works on 12 volt, Friends have told me I may have blown out the converter/inverter? First, do you think this is true and also, where is the inverter located in the RV? Help Please Thanks Tim

This is a neat very general layout for a 30AMP Trailer electrical setup.

Kinda gives you an idea how the electricl works in the trailers.

Thanks westend its the 120v breaker that blows, I see no control to change that.... Can't find the converter or inverter what ever its called. Maybe back to the tent thing.... lol

Is the circuit breaker that is tripping inside the RV or is it on a pedestal/at your house/exterior to the RV?

If it is exterior to the RV, there is little chance that it is a malfunctioning converter that is causing the trip. A shorted converter would trip an individual circuit breaker in the RV's load center and the rest of your 120V devices would remain powered.

From the events as explained, the most likely cause is a failed transfer switch. Either the contactors inside the switch are shorted to each other or a wire has parted and is shorted to ground. The solution would be the same in most cases, replacing the transfer switch. An inspection by someone familiar with transfer switches and electrical systems would be the best course of action, IMO.
  • Thanks John you taught me alot on that message, Its 120 breakers that blow, do you think its the converter... :h
  • Tim,

If you were plugged into shore power and started the generator, there has to be some safety device that keeps the power you are making from going back into the line. That device is called a transfer switch. Some are automatic, but they have to be there. You may have one that is messed up. This would be no surprise with the coaches age.

Now you have to find it....

  • You are talking 2 different power sources in your Class C (almost all RV's) one is 12 volt runs all lights, water pump, heater, hot water heater, refrig. , The other is 110 volts runs elec. outlets, microwave, A/C unit , hot water heater if you have a heating element, refrigerator when not on propane.
So the next question is are you blowing 12 volt fuses, or 110 breakers,
You may have an inverter (takes 12 volt and makes 110 volts) but I don't think you do. More then likely you have a converter (takes 110 volts and makes 12 volts) and also charges your house battery when connected to 110 volts.
On some units the fuse panel has the converter in a metal enclosure under the fuses (12volt)
When plugged into 110 volt take a reading at the pos. house batt. post if the converter is working you should be getting close to or over 13 volts to the battery which shows the converter is working and charging the house battery. If not the converter is not working or not getting power.
  • If none of your 120V devices work in the RV, your converter probably isn't powered either. Your 12V devices will work until the battery is drawn down.

I would be looking for a transfer switch, it sounds like that may be your problem.

When you say "it blows fuses", where are these fuses located?

Thanks I'll Look for that. Tim

You're welcome, and another thing you can do is google "installing a converter in an RV" and the same on youtube. You'll get an idea of what they look like.

Could be anywhere but they are often mounted near the floor with a cover plate with louvers that is removable. Look for some sort of brand name on the cover plate and google it. As to your problem, I don't know.
