Dishes in our TT

Because of where we camp, often dry camping at an airfield somewhere, or dishes and stuff gets bounced around pretty good sometimes.

We quickly discovered, as any trucker will tell you, it's a bunch easier to keep stuff from moving around in the first place than it is after it's already moving.

All we did was get some foam kids balls from the dollar store, we squish them, put them on top of the stacks of dishes and let go. As the balls expand they push up on the shelf above with just enough force to keep them from bouncing and also to push them firmly down into the foam shelf liner.

BTW, those little spring-loaded curtain rods between the floor and the under-side of the counter will keep drawers closed too.

We have a couple solutions. We have about 3 of the plastic divided compartment trays like you used to get school lunches on. My daughter loves those since she doesn't want her food touching even though I told her it slams into each other once she swallows it ;-)

We have about 4 porcelin covered steel plates that I bought from cabella's years ago that we use often as they are easy to clean. They have a 1" lip around the edge so are kind of a deep dish plate. Great for stews, chili, etc. but also fine for normal plate fare.

Then we also have some 10" plastic plates, also loved for their ease of cleaning. And of course paper plates for the quick snacks, sandwich and chips meals.

Never felt the need to have heavier home style plates while camping. The ones above are plenty sturdy and easy to clean and store. And Lighter.

have to keep it simple, but,,,, a good wine is not the same in plastic or paper, my steak or chicken tastes the same on paper or glass.

our set of wine glasses are in the origional box with dividers, we use paper plates, and what glassware we do have has not broken yet with no special care

I suspect it depends on the sorts of roads you drive, and the suspension of your trailer. I can't really comment on dishes (we use titanium dishware made for backpacking - the trailer is mostly used as a basecamp for hiking, backpacking, and kayaking trips) but had some ceramic coffee mugs that we got as a gift in the trailer for a while, until one broke while going back a rough dirt road (my minivan does not get treated gently). They'd probably been in there for two years before breaking though. Corelle is pretty tough stuff, so I'd not worry too much. Suggestion: Don't put heavier items on top of the plates.

Glassware in an RV? I never would even consider it. We have 8 plastic dishes and plates, bowls etc. that we use. They look like glass but are alot less fragile and much lighter!

Thank you all for the words of wisdom. I did tell the hubby to take a chill pill and the dishes didn't move on the ride. The fridge and the medicine cabinet were a different story, but I was prepared. We had a great first outing and my 4 year old keeps asking when we can "go fishing" again so that she can sleep in the bunk bed.

Generally if you break some dishes, just go to a thrift store and replace them. We get wine and drinking glasses there as well as coffee cups. Generally most glasses and plates are available for 25-50 cents each.

Store them like others have said, but also be sure to double check the cabinet doors before you hit the road. Make sure they are fully latched/closed.

The only time I broke dishes was when I hadn't fully closed a cabinet door, and hadn't checked the doors before we hit the road. Stuff shifted and fell out and shattered all over the counters and floor.
