Driving - Day or Night

Mostly day. But do night driving in the case of extremely hot weather to get across desert. Lets say a 3am to 11am shift.

Day. We drive 4-6 hours per day max. We arrive at next destination before dark. We travel all over the US. We are full timers. We are based on the SE Coast.

Do you know the difference between a Boat (Recreational Vessel) and an RV (Recreational Vehicle)????

As an owner and ex-owner of several, I can tell you....

Water will leak out of an RV.
(Other than that, Same-Same.)

Been there, done that. Applaud your decision to give your kids a great experience.

But you are going to LOVE being on the road after you retire.

Last year an employee of the COE project where we were volunteering was telling how rough it was towing his popup home in a storm the day before.

He asked me "What do you do with that big trailer in such weather?"

My answer "I don't go. I wander down to the CG office and pay for another day."

when I was Younger .( pre 40 ). only traveled at Night... all night... Central/East Coast. no traffic and cool temperature for me and vehicle

Older now... Day Only. everywhere. plan stops to avoid rush hours.. its meal time for me.

Last trip I went on I left at 3:00 in the morning so I could get to my destination by 4:00 in the evening. My preference is usually to leave early in the morning like that if I can get to my destination then in the afternoon hours.

Daytime, between the Appalachian mountains and the Sierra Nevada. Part of my reason for daytime is availability of services, part has to do with the fact that automotive lighting is grossly inadequate for night time driving at highway speeds common in the U.S. so that everybody is over-driving their headlights and hoping the hazards they can't see are not actually there.

I have to adjust for travel, because when I'm not traveling most of my awake hours are at night.

I wake up at 9AM
Hit the road by 10AM
Hit camp destination by 3PM


Where ever .............I'm retired and DON'T do long drives anymore cause I don't have to.

Day. We like to look at things. Looking at only the line on the highway at night makes us droopy.

If you are not on a schedule there's no reason to drive at night and sleep during the day. How would you ever explore things? Plus, there are crazy drivers at night. :)

We did 5300 miles this last trip over 16 days. Kids got to experience and learn so much – locks on the Mississippi, dawn over the Missouri River, Minute Man II Missle NHS, Badlands NP, Mt. Rushmoore, Deadwood, Sturgis, Bighorn Mtns, Shell Canyon, Cody, Yellowstone NP, West Yellowstone, Grand Tetons. Not once did I hear a are we there yet. Amazing experience fishing with my kids on the Yellowstone River while watching a eagle soar overhead and a American Bison grazing in the distance.

A couple years ago we decided if we want the kids to see and learn, that we just had to do it. Last year was Acadia, Maine coast. No telling where next year takes us. We'll join the rest of you taking it easy in retirement (hopefully).
