Extended TT living Dry Camping

I am probably going to purchase a used 21 foot travel trailer and go to California to work for an extended period of time. I have a sister that will let me put my trailer on her property but I need to know how to deal with emptying the Black/Grey water tanks and getting the "stuff" to a dump station. I will have to lift the portable tanks in to the back of my pickup so that is a concern. I would appreciate any advice on this subject or any other advice pertaining to what I plan to do. Glad to be part of this useful forum.
  • I just place the empty tank in the truck bed, use the macerator pump to fill it, drive to the dump station, attach hose to the other port, let gravity take care of of the blue boy emptying.

Fresh water, I'm sure someone can come up with a decent solution. If the TT is on property, perhaps put a large tank on a tote wagon, haul it to a faucet, fill it up, then use some type of 12 volt pump to move the water from the wagon to the fresh water fill on the RV?

    Portable ramp
    Just an idea

Depending on the size of the tank, he may need to winch it up on it. Our 35 gallon tore weighs over 280 lbs full.

If your sister has a house on the property there should be a sewer cleanout. You can run the macerator hose to the cleanout connection and pump the waste into the sewer. That will save having to haul the stuff.

If no sewer cleanout then the above suggestions are the way to go.

    X2

Stayed at sisters......it was 75' with 2' incline to the closest cleanout.
Used a portable Flojet macerator and a 3/4" hose. Worked great!

I heck of a lot easier than trying to drag the tote thru soft sandy soil, hookup to clean out, dump and repeat 4X each week....:S

As suggested....no clean out. Use macerator to pump into tote sitting in back of truck bed.
  • Your holding tanks are ALREADY portable as long as your trailer has wheels. It would make MUCH more sense to hitch up and take the trailer to the nearest public dump station in one trip (as opposed to making several) where you can dump tanks AND fill fresh water tanks at the same time. If there is no public dump stations near where you are staying, MOST RV Parks will allow you to use their dump stations for a very reasonable fee. State parks are another possibility for using the dump station. Usually you just pay the day use fee.
    Good luck / Skip

    portable tank

They work great but it sounded like he was going to have to go a distance to dump it. The portable waste tanks like you linked to are recommended to be towed no more than 5 mph.

  • The macerator pump is probably the easiest solution. If it were me I'd get a used 55 gallon plastic drum and mount it in the truck bed. A 2" ball valve & hose will allow it to empty pretty quickly.
  • Most people would probably recommend a macerator and pump it to the tank in the back of your truck. Once at dump station, use a hose and let gravity do its thing.
